And a big bag of fail =(

Okay so... got the car done today! YAY!

However, as I was driving home, all of a sudden I had no 1st or 3rd gear  .

I had to get it back to my mom's in second and deal with that crap.

I get it there and it's having a hard time starting. It's like.. I can't shift it out of gears easily and all that junk.

So what was the cause?

While I haven't completely confirmed it yet.. it's dark out and will work on it tomorrow after work.... I think my shifter dropped

It was funny because I know you guys have had it happen.. but I didn't think it would happen on the first drive!!!

on a side note, I didn't realize how much power it actually had and peeled out of the driveway when I first left

Take it easy...
It's very rare to swap an engine and have everything working perfectly from the get go. It normally will have issues. You've been solving them steadily for the last few days, and I'm confident you'll keep on doing so.

I agree you probably dropped your shifter. Not a big deal at all. The worst part is having to work underneath the car...
And, from now on, make sure you tighten your bolts...

yeah I know.

I was just scary when your going home and you lose 1st and 3rd. And all you have is the other gears..

Did you fill the trans?

And there's several solutions to dropped linkage... a bolt, a bracket...

Yeah...
It happened to me, a few years ago, but I lost everything.
I was climbing on a bridge (luckily, very close to the top), and when I went to change gears, I just lost any resistance on the shifter. Fortunately, it happened right as I went through neutral, so I coasted down the bridge, and into a parking lot. When I got under the car, I had lost the bolt between the shifter and the linkage to the tranny...
So I walked to an auto parts store, bought a bolt and some nylock nuts, and, less than an hour later (after burning my hands thoroughly with the stupid exhaust), I was back on the road.

yep trans was filled. I forget how much gear oil it took but I filled it.

Clutch seems good. I can hold the pedal down and go between the "good" gears and it works fine.

So yeah I am hoping/thinking it's the shifter linkage that dropped. Will be checking all bolts and also making an anti-drop bracket similar to the group buy one.

edit:

In a way I'm kinda glad it's not being driven. My exhaust is LOUD.. like I can't stand it at all. It's just like RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICE *shift* RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICE.... ugh

hopefully a big resonator will do the trick and quiet it down. Though I am going to have 2.25 inch piping. Maybe I'll replace the muffler tip with something better.. still getting ideas up for that.

I have one I want gone :(

My whole problem is that I don't know much about exhaust. Just ways that the diameter of piping affects an engine.

But I don't know what makes an exhaust sound good, or what ricey/farty.

So I'm just not sure where to go to get a good sound. I just know i want 2.25 inch piping for now (until I turbo later on and go for 2.5 inch piping)

If you're gonna get a turbo later, try to get a cheap exhaust now, as the turbo acts like a muffler. There was talk about a Dynomax muffler here, not long ago. Seems to have really good sound.
And Dynomax is the cheapo brand sold at AAP, so I'm pretty sure it won't break the bank...

Nope. Sorry...:(

But take a look here:

That's about all I know of it...

Well guys....

the shifter was dropped... we fixed that.. but that wasn't the problem.

The problem:

speedo gear is broke off inside the transmission. It's wedged somewhere between 1st and 3rd fork. We were able to pull a fragment of it out with a magnet but it's not all going to come out. It's stuck in there...

We now have to take the transmission apart =(

Ouch! That sucks... :(

So, are you gonna open your tranny, or make a trip to the junkyard?

well I guess I'll open up the tranny. It is only a 60k miles tranny. And it's the sephia transmission.
