Hello guys, I have a question for all of you. I've never really used my A/C much in my MX...I usually roll the windows down in summer, and enjoy the air outside. However, yesterday I turned the A/C on... and nothing but hot air came out. So, I went and got a Retro fit kit, (112r to 134r), I tested to see if any of the old style freon was still in the system, it wasn't, so I began the proper install of adding new freon to my system. I turned the car on, set the A/C to "on", and turned the A/C to max.
Now, within about 10 seconds of adding the freon..I heard odd sounds coming from the compressor...kind like a metallic hissing, "rwwwwring" sound. So, to be on the safe side... I stopped adding freon to the car, and turned the car off. I haven't had the chance to really see if there is a change in the A/C temp... but I noticed that when I steeped on the gas at idle, that metallic hissing, "rwwwwring" sound went away.
Guys, does this mean that it just takes time for the freon and oil in it to work it's way throught the A/C system, because I have never really used it in like, 5 years..... or is it something that needs to be replaced? Also, the MX is a 1993 rs auto.

It is somewhat normal to hear the compressor making a metallic sound, especially when adding new gas, the compressor is low on gas/oil and once you start filling it up it should eventually go away, mine grinds like a mofo when I turn on the AC for the first few min.. There's something wacko in my system tho.

Anyways, add the freon as instructed and ignore the sound

Do make sure you put in the right amount of freon. If you put in too much, it'll continue to blow hot air. You'll know if you add too much. The A/C lines will be really freakin' cold, and could start to show some frost if you go overkill.

I'll make sure on that Savin. And btw, have you ever done yours also? The retro fit?

Lol and here I was thinking that something was wrong with my compressor... mine makes that same noise!

The retrofit? no I haven't. My brother has in his mustang though.
I'd still suggest getting it professionally charged though since its been empty for such a long time. Their A/C machines can vacuum test/leak test the system and get all the air out before putting the freon in. My brother has a professional A/C machine, and doing it right makes a difference.

Yeah Dark, these compressors are something else. lol

And if it seems to not be going as planned Savin, I'll take it a shop.

I know with the GT it's going to an A/C shop for it's retrofit.. and I may even take mine down if it doesn't stop with the noise

Did you put new seals in the compressor as part of the conversion and if so where ddid you buy the kit? Mines R12 as well and need to charge it. I was going to go with that Canadian Tire Red Tek crap? As a side note I had the compressor replaced in my 94 MX-6. The box said 09-20-- Crown Victoria. WTF Compressors are very pricey. Rockauto is the best price for sure but my local shop found me one for $429.

Hi D. I didnt change those, but, I believe my compressor is bad. I'm taking it to the shop next week, and I'll see what the shop has to say.
