My sister just gave me her mazda mx3. Its a 93. The engine is the 4cyl. 1.6 liter engine. It has around 213k miles on it and sounds good, just needs an alternator.

I was wondering what kinda work or fabrication needs to be done to drop the BP engine in it.

I never really worked on a mazda before so im not sure what the swap needs

Does it just drop in?
Does the transmission fit right in?

And is JDM depot reliable? I heard of it before and i checked to see if they had the engine. Its only a $1000.

Well thanks guys, im off to go fishing.

In the 1993.... a BP will bolts straight in, no questions asked.

Just, don't bother with a JDM motor. Go get one from a Tracer, Sephia, Protege/Escort GT. a RWD motor is SLIGHTLY different than FWD, but they make the same power....

Just, save yourself $700. The engine is really only worth 200-400 bucks.

the only things are running a single wire from the VICS solenoid to a pin on the new ECM, and maybe changing the fuel rail harness/fuel rail itself if you get a Ford motor. Also need an U code VAF. BP09 ECM. thats it.

A miata BP is different from a protege BP as it is set up for RWD.

There are posts on here by limegreenmx3 that explain the differences.

If you're going to get an engine from the importer, get the BP-T, otherwise a junkyard BP w/ a turbo kit will make more power since it is higher compression.

straight forward no fabrication needed?
What about wiring harnesses and all that.

The miata bp oil pan, windage try and oil tube filter has to be swap out for a fwd BP oil pan, windage try and oil tube filter.

The miata thermostat housing has to be swap out for the fwd bp thermostat housing. Also on the miata they have a water neck between the cam gears that needs to be block off. To do that is a bit of work removing the cam gears removing the black plate and the 2 bolts for the water neck to put in a freeze plug or modifying the water neck by cutting cap and weld the water neck if u cant get a freeze plug and redo the timing put back together.

Then there is using the fwd BP intake manifold and the fwd header "not headers like most people say" fwd bell housing transmission plate has to be used and a bunch more.

There are other things that have to be change out to make a miata bp work in fwd form thats a bit to explain so do urself the favor and just get a bp for the list of bp donor cars. how do i know i did it years ago.

anyways please search and think of it this way how would u feel answering the same ? over and over again. if u can't find it say u cant it im sure someone on here and find a link to ur ? u would like to know

It's not even really a matter of him having to search. He's asking questions that have been answered in this same thread, a couple posts up. That is the ultimate cause for the flames to ignite.

Oh well...

I know I'm a little late, but everyone knows this in in the FAQ, right? Not even a search involved...
