I just bought an a/c and a ps belt and before the belts made a high pitch squealing noise, but then after i replaced the belts they still squealed alittle especially the ps belt. Anyway im just wondeirng how tight do the belts need to be and is there anyway to tell w/o using a v-belt tension gauge?

1/4-1/2 inch deflection is good for new belts pushing in with your thumb. There is a set delfection with XX amount of force that you can research. I'm assuming the squeeling is from slip. If it's just the belts themselves then believe it or not spray soak them with ,,,,WD40. That's what garages do.

when does it squeal? when starting up or a lot of load? or consistently while the car is running? you should be able to tell if it's slipping or it's just squeaking from a pulley or something

It squeals when I first start the car and turn the wheel, but when the car is warmed up its fine.

Yeah it's probably slipping over the PS pulley, tighten it up a tad.

If the belts are too tight do they still squeal?

get a can of belt dressing. You can also tighten tension to a mark where it used to be at before. Usually there will be grease on threads so you can easily tell where bolt used to be at.

check the deflection where there is the most distance of belt between pullies.
