bought the wrong transmission :(

Hey guys
I'm a member of the Toronto Protege Club. My transmission is busted (3rd gear synchro totally shot) and I picked up a used tranny off another guy who had posted on our forums. Unfortunately I purchased an F series transmission (2001 and up proteges use the G series transmission).
I was told that the mx-3 uses this F series transmission? is that the case? I figured I would post up here if that was true, as I'm hoping there's someone out there that needs a transmission. I realize this isn't the buy/sell section and that I need 30 posts to put anything up for sale, so I guess I'm just first checking to see if this transmission is in fact the same one that the mx3 uses?

As far as I know (I may be wrong), the F and G trannies are exactly the same, with the exception of different gear ratios. So you CAN use your tranny in your car.

The F-series transmissions are weaksauce, much like the westside
But yeah, the I4 MX-3s have the F-series transmission from factory...

It doesn't happen very often Inodoro, but you're wrong on this one.

The two series are not interchangeable. As far as I know the K-engine G-series will not bolt up to a B-engine, and vice-versa.
The G-series is also considered to be more bullet-proof than the F-series.

that being said, I'm really hoping I can unload this transmission so that I can source a G series. Been driving with no third gear for a few months now

Anyways, thanks for the info.

Sorry to hear that. If it was a G series I'd be all on taking it off you.. but as far as I know, the F series won't take much abuse, and well.. I plan to turbo and for that reason I don't think I want it.
But yeah sorry to hear that! I'm sure someone will want it.

You're both wrong.
The F series came on MX-3 RS. G series came on BP (and B8?) engines. The MX3 GS came with G series as well. The series of the tranny relates to the internals of teh tranny, not the bell housing. The housings are interchangeable. The G was a stronger design with more race oriented gearsets, where the F was less sturdy, geared for fuel economy.

So what you're saying is that a G-series from a K8 engine will bolt up to a B6 engine? If that's the case, then I'm wrong. But I'm pretty sure that's not the case...

No, I'm saying the guts ( shaft diameters, etc) are the same between a BP and a K8 and a DE.
The bell housings differ depending on type of motor.

That's pretty much what I said. Why would you say I was wrong?
A G-series from a K8 engine will not bolt up to a 4 cylinder engine...

Gentlemen, I'm gonna have to disagree with both of you on this one.
I happen to have a tranny I took from a '94 GS at the junkyard, and I can tell you it bolts right up to the BP block from the B8 engine I took from my '91 protege.

Jerk...
Well if that's the case then I withdraw my previous statements. Althought the BP did run a G-series, so perhaps that's why.

Hmmm. I just dug up my old protege manual (Haynes), and this is what it says:
"The manual transaxle is a compact, two piece, lightweight aluminum alloy housing containing both the transmission and differential assemblies. A F5M-R transaxle is used with the 1.6L and 1.8L SOHC engines and a G5M-R unit is used with the 1.8L DOHC engine for 1990 through 1992 model years. The 1993 and 1994 transaxles were designated as F25M-R for SOHC engines and G25M-R for the DOHC engine. The 1995 and later models use the F25M-R transaxle for both the 1.5L and the 1.8L DOHC engines. All transaxles are virtually identical except for different gear ratios."
I'm starting to think that maybe they made a different, sportier version for the MX-3???
