rear drum and hub removal

hey all, i have a rear hub that needs changing badly on my driver side. i know that to remove the drum, all i need to do is take out the 2 big phillips screws and knock it off or use the threaded holes to push it off with a screw. my PROBLEM is that the two retaining screws are badly rusted and seized. Additionally, it looks like the PO stripped them a bit as well so i was not able to get a good grip on them.
My question is this: Can i just drill the screws out so that i can get the drum off and then NOT replace them when i put the drum back on? i have owned many cars and trucks and this is the first i have ever owned that had retaining screws on the drums. on most of the vehicles i have owned the drum is simply held on by the wheel and lugnuts.
is there any issue with this that i am overlooking?
