BP Engine won;t start???

Post by taylor_matt »

Ok so at first the BP engine didn;t start because there was no fuel pumping. I figured that out tonight and fuel is getting to the engine now BUT it only turns over and then shoots fire out of the header.
In case no one knows, its a 93 BP engine swapped into a 95 MX-3.
If anyone has any idea on what the problem may be please let me know asap,
thanks.

Timing right?

Those are most common...

So checked out the timing and found that the cams are out of phase entirely. Calling some garages tomorrow to get a price on having it timed.
Thanks for all the help

man thats easy as ever.

let off the tensioner entirely.

line up the crank gear and wrap the belt around that...

get buddies to line up and hold the cams in palce with wrenches, put the belt on.

Done.

I just found out that the timeing cover near the crank with the timing indicator on it, is not there. Can;t a still allign the crank gear with out that mark?

Also, i checked with the garage and they told me that i probably bent my valves when i tried starting the engine. What are the chances that happened? I'm kinda worried now.

Don't take your car to that garage. It's impossible for you to bend yor vavles while starting. NON INTERFERENCE ENGINE. impossible unless your valves are floating (happens @ 9kish?)

You need that mark around the crank. Otherwise, there are other ways to line it up @ TDC, but I don't know off hand.

cyl 1 at the bottom, or top? do this by sticking something soft like a wooden shishkabob stick down the plug hole and turning the crank untill it is either at the top or bottom...

Well i took the timing belt off tonight. I was able to turn the cams but not sure how I'm going to get the crank turned, its such a small space.

Make sure someone is on the clutch and a big wrench/ratchet.

I don't remember which cyls are used for TDC. I'd guess #1.

I think i was told cyl #1. But i don;t think i will be able to get a wrench in there. I'll have to give it a try tonight.

You can take the pully off if you remove the pass side wheel and wheel well/splashsheild thing. Plain view.

assuming this is easy, and reads how it seems...

cyl 1 should be at TDC to time at TDC. Put something non-abrasive but rigind down there and move the crank untill it pushes the rod up to the highest point...(this should be about 2-3 o'clock on the crank gear, IIRC) hold the cams in place(making sure they're on right, with marks straight up) and get that belt on.

Thats how I'd try.
