new Syncros and Bearings

So I got quoted $800CDN by a local tranny shop to install a new bearing and Synchro kit in my spare tranny. The parts are only $350ish so I was wondering if anyone here has ever done their own tranny rebuild?

I'm sure I could disassemble and reassemble the shafts correctly but I'm worried a little about alignment of the gears after reassembly. Has anyone ever done this themselves who could give me a little insight into the details of this task?

I'm seriously tempted to go for it.

I think either on here or clubprotege there is a picture guide to rebuilding a tranny...if you have the time and patience, I say go for it! I wouldn't want to spend 500 on labor, instead spend that money getting the metal pieces cryo treated and micropolished.

There are also some members on the boards that have done this before..check the worklogs, I think Mil<e is one of them.

hey that link is awesome! i couldnt find it when i searched imazda so you saved me a lot of tyme. i have been doing a little research on the posts and, am I understanding it correctly that the only real difference between the transaxles covered in the link and my 92rs is the reverse syncro? otherwise i should be able to follow, pretty much, step by step the same process? my mx starts shaking about 45-55mph under acceleration, shakes less when coasting and not at all when the clutch is in. both cv's are fairly new, the oldest is about 6 months old. new tires and alignment 3 months ago, so between that and the smooth ride in neutral i have ruled out wheel bearings and unbalenced tires. I'm thinking it's prolly one of the bearings inside the tranny, then i could kill 2 birds with one stone and get rid ov the sticky 2nd gear that i believe to be the syncro, AND all the leaks! hahaha YAY PROJECTS!!!

Your RS has an F25M-R tranny. It is covered specifically in that document. Good luck with your rebuild.

hey thanks! I'm gonna need it, hahahahahahaha.also i was wondering if there are any special tools I may need. i read that someone was using 2x4's to pop the bearings and gears off, is it really so easy? so no need for a press or anything? also, on a write up, it said parts would "fall out" when the case was removed, if they just fall out how do you know where they went? there was also alot about making sure the measurements of everything was correct, how precise does it really have to be? or will i even need to go that far with it? I may just be building it up in my mind since the haynes said "dont touch it!" and i don't really know anything about tranny's except what i have read over the past several days on different posts. I have also been pricing used and rebuilt tranny's. I found a used one local that says it's a class A for $350 USD but i have found rebuilds for like $550 USD with free shipping. so I guess my next question is to all the guys that have done this... parts are $270USD is it worth the extra hundred not to tear this basterd apart? or is it not only simple enaugh that an ameture could pull it off as long as they were attentive but also totally worth the experience? don't mean to be long winded, just like to "know my enemy" and what im getting into since this is my daily driver and i gotta get it up soon. thanks for the input!

If I'm being totally brutally honest with you...I would say have a professional do it, or pick up a rebuilt tranny. You definitely do need a press if you want any hope of getting the new bearings on straight, and you definitely do need to be very precise with things like bearing preload and backlish adjustment or you will have tranny problems very quickly.

I am a very experienced mechanic, though not a professional by any means, and I understand all of the procedures in that document and I would not do a rebuild without the assistance of someone with specific experience.

Just my 2 cents. Unless you are really strapped and cannot possibly afford to pay the extra dough to have it done professionally, don't try to do this on your own.

yeah.... seems like a fun project but i dont think i wanna do it when it really matters to get it done right. I'm just gonna cross my fingers and hope my student money comes through soon, hahaha. then when i got him up and running again I will keep the old tranny and experiment with it BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!! who knows maybe use it as a shell starting point to build up n get ready 4 the turbo!...some day....
