Beware! Rust beneath rear wiper fluid tank!

While soundproofing today, I was removing all the back trim and decided to remove the rear wiper fluid tank and clean all the junk there...to my surprise as I poked and prodded with the shop vac I was sucking up the entire floor....and i was able to punch through it. Needless to say I now have a 6"x4" missing piece of metal in the corner of the trunk! BAH! I'm heading out in a little to get an estimate because I don't know how to use my welder yet and I don't even have it up here at school. Hopefully it won't cost too much.

Everyone should check this on your cars so you can fix it before it becomes too bad! It didn't look bad at ALL from beneath the car - it rusted from the inside out, probably from overfilling as the tank still has fluid in it and I have never filled it.

One of the local bodyshop guys is going to try to fix it tonight/tomorrow. Apparently if we do it the best way of rebuilding it the way it was, it will take significant time and money. So I told him to go ahead and "trim the sides" so the space won't be as deep, and the washer tank won't fit in there 100%, it will be slightly raised, but I will be saving some money. Hopefully it will be less than $200! The guy gave me lots of tips for me to do it myself but I'm finding less and less time :( I also don't have a die grinder and don't know how to use my welder yet lol.

In other news, I found out today that the car had been in an accident! Smushed the rear passenger side and is prob. a factor to the rust. The body shop guy was able to point out the slight differences in welds from the factory to the person that fixed the car...and all that didn't come up on the carfax! :( I guess you get what you pay for...I wanted a cheap cheap car to rebuild.

if the car was fixed by a good place, is not problem.... but as you know this issue now, I think that would be good if you check entire car ...... just to avoid problems in the future.

I checked my, and was OK, just dirty, but OK....

Good luck .....

Mine has a similar problem, except the metal looks and feels fine, but the washer motor was completely rusted and seized.
