I know the 93 and 94 standard trans. are interchangeable but I have a 96 MX3 which is a split production year from what the Wreckers told me. Any idea what year MX6 or 626 trans I can use? Or can I just change out the "main drive gear"? Thanks

As far as I know, there should be no compatibility difference between a 92 and a 96. The gearboxes are based on compatibility of the motor. The K8, KF and KL's all use G-series gearboxes and are all interchangable because they're all K-series motor. For the tranny to be incomplatible, it would have to be a different style motor.

What do you mean changing out "the main gear"? What did they say the difference was?

I meant the finall gear (the big one), not 1,2,3,4 or 5th. Sorry I can't remember what it's called. I was wondering if changing that gear might be an option. Trannies are a little pricey and could of been abused. I wanted to go with an MX6 trans not my MX3

Cheap and in good condition are kinda oxymorons, going to be hard to find.

Not sure on what the price is, but the youngest trannys and the best gears are that out of a Ford Escort ZX-2, those are 4.11:1. The only thing is that you'd have to go is actually remove the gears and put them in your Mx-3 tranny, but doing it that way you'd actually be able to inspect the gears. If you're going that route, might as well throw in an LSD while everything is apart.

Could I take a LSD from one of those weird axel JDM mx6 trans and install it in my trans. I can pick up one of those for around $350.00 I hope I explained it right. The axels for that trans aren't available here so they're tough to find.

Yes and no. Technically, you can only use the LSD from a JDM Mx-6 (neglecting the different splines for the axles) if you swap the rest of the gearset. The thing is that the gear on the differential matches pinion gear on the secondary shaft of your actual gears, and they differ from your Mx-3's gears because your Mx-3 uses a final drive of 4.38:1, while the Mx-6 is 4.11:1, and the final drive is literally the ratio between the differential and the pinion gear.

You can try to swap the pinion gear from the Mx-6 secondary shaft into you Mx-3's, but that's apparently extremely difficult. The only thing you can do is drill off the rivets holding on the gear around your Mx-3's differential, take the one off the Mx-6 LSD, than put your Mx-3 gear on the Mx-6 LSD

Is the g-series in the mx-3 v6 the same as the protege dohc 1.8 g-series tranny and are the axel splines the same 24mm etc. Meaning will axels from a 92 mx-3 v6 manual trans work in a 90 protege g-series manual trans? This trans is in a 92 mx-3 b6 sohc

I'HAV GOT 98 MX3 1.6 DOHC ATM I WANT TO CHANGE IT TO MANUAL CAN A K8 ONE WORK

Yes and no. The gears themselves are, but the case/housing for the tranny isn't. So basically you could put the gears from one tranny into the other, but you can't bolt the tranny from the one to the other, it won't mate up.

When they talk about the trannys, you will see that there are G series for both the V6 and I4 Mazda's. I think the right way to describe it and look at it is that they use G-series gears, they're in a way not G-series trannys. It's the case that determines if it mates to a I4 or a V6. Like you can swap the internal gearsets from anything like Probe/Mx-3, Protege LX, Mx-6/626 and even a Ford Escort ZX2 and a MazdaSpeed Protege because they all use G-series trannies, you just need to match up the ratios (like the pinion+differential gear, and use the paired primary and secondary gearshafts together), but they all fit in with no modifications.

When the 4cyl guys talk about the F-series, they use a different gearset. They both use cases that are I4 compatible reason why you can swap them around, but you can't take out the guts and swap them (best to my knowledge) because the gear are of a different series.

No, you need all the parts from a 4cyl Mx-3.
