New Owner 1992 1.6L

Hi guys and gals, I just purchased a 1992 MX-3 with the 1.6L engine I beleive it is a sohc.

I have a few questions

First my manual transmission has some problems sometimes not going into 1st and sometimes 2nd but then sometimes it works perfectly, some grinding noises are heard sometimes. The clutch is suppose to be new, seller had a bill to show for it $350.

Anyway how hard is it to remove the tranny from these carsl protege 5 sp, any special tips tricks if I need to? Also I have been searching for the info I need but cannot find nearly all of it. Will a 1990 1.8 protoge 5 spd. bolt up and work properly or what about a '88 626 5 spd. not sure of engine displacement but it;s a 4 cyl fwd I beleive 12 valve engine 2.2 maybe or 1.6 maybe? Will any of these 5 spd's work and what would be negatives and positives.

Secondly I have beeping seatbelt thing which I'm going to try and get mazda to perform all of the recalls.

Thirdly I do not know if the timing belt has been changed the car currently has 128,xxx miles and I'm wondering if this car has an inspection plate or something to see the t-belt. Also how difficult is the t-belt job on these cars how many hours, do you have to lift the engine out or tilt... or can remove inner fender and have clearance, also any special tools to perform this. Also is the 1.6l for a '92 an interference engine? meaning will I hurt the internals if the t-belt shreads teeth or breaks?

And Lastly is forced induction(thinking turbo mainly) out of the question for 1.6L SOHC 4 cyl engine? I would only be running low boost on this little car 5-6 PSI tops. Would this condition decrease liability a lot? How do these 1.6L's take to boost, is the compression low enough for boost?

Sorry for all the questions but I need to get this car in good shape quickly, and I'am very capable of making these repairs myself, just unfamiliar with the drivetrain and specifics of these cars and most mazda's but I love these mx-3's I learned how to drive a 5 spd. in one when I was 16

Thanks to anyone who can help me with these questions and concerns and thanks for this great community.

Sorry for all the questions

Hey man... welcome! Yes... these questions have been asked millions of times, but I'm in an okay mood.

Your engine is the B6 SOHC. It has an F-series tranny. The 1.8L Protege has a G-series tranny. Both trannies will bolt up to the engine, but the G-series tranny is much more rugged, and a bit more performance geared. (Both have a very short fifth gear).

There's a relatively quick fix for the seatbelt warning chime. Click Here

The mazda B and K-series engines are non-interference engines. You will not bend any valves if the timing belt breaks.

As far as boosting the b6... I think you would be much happier just swapping in that 1.8L BP from the Protege that you were talking about. It is literally a direct swap for your car, same engine mounts, same wiring, etc. Your engine is capable of 88 hp at the crank, while the BP puts out roughly 127 horses at the crank. Bigtime improvement.

Good Luck!

Thanks very much guys, I just pulled the tranny out of the protege. What a PITA that was heh been sitting awhile, I start it up and drive it around the yard every once in awhile. The clutch has been pretty much gone since the day I bought it(protege). My mx-3 has a new clutch that I'm pretty sure will work with the G-series transmission.

I will take a look at links you guys posted. Thanks again for answering my questions and for this great place. heh Big difference driving an 88hp MX-3 than a 305rwhp Supra, but I always did drive FWD cars before I owned my Supra.

Is there any interchange between the 1988 2.2L 4 cyl 626 with the 92 mx3 sohc 1.6 or the 1.8L dohc protege?

All are manual transmission

I did read it, I thought it said I needed to use the G-series clutch and flywheel.

If you've got a protege lying around, you might as well do the BP swap for +20 some HP/Tq. You can keep your clutch, and I belive most if not all parts are completely interchangeable. Theres some awesome guides on this site, the search function is mint.

I may swap the 1.8 into it later as for now I have a decently low mileage B6

PLEASE HELP ME

Okay I read the write-up but now I'm confused.

First here is what I did.
Out of the 1990 protege lx I pulled the transmission, flywheel, and the driveaxels

Now today I just pulled the transmission out of the Mx-3 4 cyl.

Where I got confused is, I was told I had to use the protege flywheel but was told I could use my clutch and PP from the F-series mx-3 tranny.

Well my clutch and PP are to small to fit on the flywheel from the protege?

Can I use the mx-3's flywheel and clutch assembly with the protege's G-series transmission and then just use the drive axels from the protege? Secondly which pilot bearing should I use the one in the F-series seems to be smaller in diameter? Please someone help me I need to get this transmission in tomorrow at the latest.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I believe so.
Which pilot bearing/throw out bearing would I use with this setup?

Okay just to clear this mis-information up. You cannot use a 1.6l sohc clutch kit with the protege LX g-series transmission, the spline is to big to fit through the clutch disc. I spent 3 hours today trying to make it, thanks to the mis-info I got here. Anyway I bolted the protege flyhweel up today and the clutch kit for a 1990 protege lx 1.8 dohc will be in at 10am tomorrow, and then I will try this again and see how it works. The flywheel is a bit larger in diameter, and elevated where the bolt holes are. Hopefully this will work tomorrow and all of my time and effort isn't wasted. Anyway just thought I would clear that up for anyone else going to attempt this in the future who don't want to waste a day or two trying to put a combination together that will not work.

The transmissions will fit directly on the engine, but i think that if you are going to use a BP transmission than your going to need the 1.8 flywheel and clutch. As the splines are different between the two trannys.

I guess nothing beats a good search
but I'm really sorry for the misinfo, I should realy shut up if I don't know for sure.
My Bad.
