Cars with 4.11 Final drive:
-90-94 Mazda Protege LX (1.8 dohc)
-95 Protege ES
-93-97 Mazda 626 and MX-6 (both 4cyl and 6cyl
-98-02 Mazda 626 (all models)
-01-03.5 Protege (all with 2.0 engines)
-91-94 Mercury Capri (all) note, these all have a cable operated clutch (which doesn't really matter if ur just taking the gears)
-91-96 Ford Escort GT or LX-E (with 1.8 dohc)
-91-96 Mercury Tracer LTS (with 1.8 dohc)
-97-Present Ford Escort & ZX2 (ALL MODELS, either 2.0 SPI or Zetec...all have a G-series gear box)
SPLINE COUNTS:
28 splines are on:
MX-3 GS
Probe GT
MX-6 LS
626 ES (93-02)

Gro is saying that all MX6's, both 4 and 6 cyl have the G series tranny. I take this as gospel. He also says that the spline count on a MX6 LS and MX3 GS is 28 and everything else is 26. DE's are very rare at my local self serve wrecker's. If I get a G series tranny from a 4 cyl MX6 RS, obviously I will need a 26 spline clutch disk. Will I need a different flywheel as well? Will the MX6 LS flywheel bolt to the MX3 GS crankshaft? I think my diff is going and I want to grab this MX6 RS tranny cuz it's wiked cheap, but I would like to straighten out what clutch parts I'll need before I commit the time.
Thanks

It has just occurred to me that when he says spline count, he's referring to the axels not the output shaft.
So then using an MX-6 RS tranny would require the use of different axels or swapping the diff out. I think my diff is the problem, so this no longer makes sense...I think.
Could someone please set me straight on this.
Thanks.

The spline counts are the side gears mated with the diff. That means you need a 28 spline count inner cv joint or entire axle which the GS, v-6 model Mx allready has.

But according to Gro, the MX6 RS 4cyl tranny has a 26 spline diff. I can't find a cheap V6 tranny of any kind up here. For some reason there's nothing but 4cyl cars in the wrecker's. The bolt pattern is the same and the internals are all the same, but the splines on my inner CV joints will not work.
So I'm looking for a V6 tranny.

Yes, you should be looking for a v-6 trans. Forget about the 4cyl stuff...they won't bolt up to a v-6.

I disagree. I think the MX-6, 626, and PGT 4cyl trannies and the ZX2 tranny will bolt up, just the splines in the diff are wrong. Then there's axel work and all that crap.
So on that point you're right, V6 is just better.

The bellhousings are different btwn 4 and 6 cyls. They WILL NOT WORK unless you switch bellhousings. To me, that's more work to swap bellhousings but could be done if you really wanted to. All you need to look for is trans from a 6cyl. That's much easier to do..

Only the capri XR2's with the turbo are G-series. The non-turbo ones are f-series trans
