valve job

my 92' GS needs this badly and i was planning on doing it in the next few days, i was just wondering if their are any usual complications i should know about.

I thought K8's were self-adjusting.

lol well that could be a major complication, damn my post carbruetor era ignorance but what are self adjusting valves?

The HLA is a hydraulic valve lifter assembly. It is designed to pressurize with engine oil and automagically create the perfect clearance between the cam and the lifter.

This shows the factory troubleshooting guide:

and this shows how to physically test one once it's out of the head:

If one (or more) HLA is seized, either in it's bore or on itself, your K8 will sound like a typewriter. Try running some engine flush with your next oil change. If that doesn't work, you have to remove the camshafts to get to the HLA's. It can be done on the car and if you have engine experience it won't scare you, but the timing has to be done and the distributor has to come off so it's not for amateurs.
