i was giving my car a bit of acceleration then once i backed off the throttle it was jerky and when i came to change down a gear the revs went to zero and the engine cut out it started back up straight away but was really hesitant and raw petrol smell coming from exhaust with smoke and the rotten egg smell from the cat. i let the car sit for a couple of hours and it started ok but idle is at like 200rpm and its really misfiring. any ideas?

If you have a rotten egg smell from the cat.. it is plugged and will need to be replaced. Put your hand over the end of the exaust pipe (only when cold.. dont burn yourself) and have someone start the engine.. you shouldnt be able to keep your hand on the pipe.. but if there is a blockage in the cat.. the pressure coming out the back of the pipe will be weak. A blocked cat can definitely cause the symptoms you described as well.

I would replace my fuel filter first really easy to do if its plugged under accel you will be pushing enough fuel but as soon a u back off the fuel volume will go down and possible to restrict the fuel flow enough to stall your car

the cat is just new and so is the fuel filter. pulled the leads one by one and engine note changed on everyone apart from cylinder number 2 but spark is still getting to it. went to mechanic and they said it could be a valve problem or an injector staying on all the time on that cylinder.

You can still get CEL functionality by connecting a 12v bulb between FEN and B+ in the diagnostic box.

took the car to the garage and problem cured. turned out there was an engine wiring loom problem and the co2 level was extremely high it was just chucking in fuel. car is better now. thanks for all the help.
