shift fork replacement?

In my 92 mx3 gs the shift fork broke in the bell housing. While the part is cheap the labor is expensive so I'd like to do it myself and do the clutch at the same time but not sure. I've been told by one mechanic that it's an easy replacement and then my friends mechanic says on this car it's definately not a walk in the park. Could someone give me some insight on this? I'd be doing it in a simple garage using standard jacks and jackstands and I'd have air tools available.

Only your second post and you are already pulling the trans. lol
It is not that hard, but does take some time to get it out, replace the clutch and back in.
Do you know how to replace the clutch? It is technical and needs to be done right. If you mess up you won't know until the trans is back in place and then you have to pull it again. I'f you are not sure I'd get someone to hlep that has pulled a trans and done a clutch before.
Basically:- drain the trans fluid, pull the axles, disconnect the clutch and tie it up to something like the upper coolant hose, support the engine with a hoist, remove the lower cross member/s (both of them if you have a GS, only one on a RS), remove the trans mounts (all three), unbolt the trans, now tilt the motor using the hoist so that the trnas faces downward (careful not to put too much stress on the passanger side engine mount or you'll break it), pry the trans from the motor (careful it is heavy and you need someone to "catch" it so that it doesn't hit the ground). Replace the clutch and fork, greasing the fork on the wear spots. Installation is reverse of removal.
This is a simplfied version of the steps. I still suggest you get someone who has done it before.

Well it may be my second post but I'm not new to working on a car. in my 97 sentra automatic I've done a motor swap and a few cam shaft swaps. I do have a friend helping me who has done a clutch before. Just wanted to be sure that there is nothing really difficult about replacing the fork. Getting the tranny out and back in will definately be time consuming but other than the occasionally stubborn bolt I don't think it will be too difficult
