engine/ troubleshoot codes

Is there a way of reading/ identifying engine codes inside the car such as with some older Chryslers were able to do...ie......turning the ignition switch off and on continuously and then counting the number of times the signal indicators blinked or reading a code number on the factory stereo....If so what is the procedure to doing this and please if there is tell me it's not through the factory stereo cause i got rid of that thing years ago.
