Ive got somewhat simple question. Im by far no stereo expert but here it is. Could I run lets say two 500watt amps to power one 1000-1200 watt sub. Would I be able to run them in parallel?

I've done it. Two MTX 500d's on an Earthquake 15" Magma. Hooked each amp to 1 voice coil. It worked fine for 2 years, before I upgraded to an MTX 81000d amp.

some competition amps come with the ability to put 1 sub over two amps. Takes a lot of 'special' equipment to set the gains and freq's (damage amps if they are not perfect)
see it done, not usually done - but possible, definetly not recommend for a personal car

Thats exactly how my setup is. Most higher quality amps such as my kickers have a feature called strappable. What happens is you run a monophonic cable from one amp to another amp then run 1 speaker wire to one terminal on the speaker another, then the other amp one wire to the other terminal, lastly the 2 leftover wires connect from one amp to the other. Always consult with owners manual first though. Also you can run any 2 amps to seperate voice coils but I would highly suggest you match your amps. What this means is if the amps have birth certificates you dont want any more than a 50 watt gap in the total output power. This makes it easier to level match the amps which can be done with a simple inexpensive multi meter..........
In one install i actually used 4 amps to power a single quad voice coil sub....Never had a problem except that i was overpowering the sub but that was used for spl where overpowering and pushing the limits is the name of the game.
