GE 29897 phone with 'answerer' - stupid machine

We finally got a landline for our home. So we were looking for a corded phone with answering machine that could sit on a kitchen wall.
We got a GE 29897. What a peice!!!!!
It works ok as a phone. But the 'answerer' as they call it will never pick up a fricken call!!! All it does is beep, doesn't play the recording, and hangs up the caller, then resets all the info in the phone!!!! What the hell!!!!
Tech support just said to pull the plug for ten minutes and try again. This only wasted ten minutes, and let the tech support agent off the phone.
So unless someone has a great idea, this phone is cr*p, and it's going back.

DO NOT BUY ONE FROM GE unless it's just a phone.

I've heard that GE sold out to another company - so that might be why the product and support isn't so great.........
