Tranny problems

Car:1993 Mx3 gs v6 auto...Okay for the past week and a half I've had the following problems with my car...I'm almost 85% sure its the tranny but it could be something else-I hope. Okay I get in my car and it starts like always. I start driving down my street and maybe about 2-4 minutes the car heats up,almost in the red and it starts slipping gears( I'm thinking) its like I press the gas and its only going about 30 or 35 and its reving up to 4 or 5 grand. I then have to manually shift gears..during all this the [hold] keeps flashin g and the check engine lite is on. So I went to this tranny shop down road and the guy told me he would need tyo check the computer to his machine which costs around $60 then if its the tranny he needs about $1200-$1400 to get a used one from a junk yard. I was like what!? I can get one for about $200 and put that s--- in my self. So guys any one have any suggestions/ideas/comments?:help:

so u give it gas and all it does is rev up but not really go anywhere fast? if so ur tranny might be dying its happened to me twice which ended up in 2 trannies needimg replacement..

You can get engine/tranny codes yourself without the $60 computer.
For engine codes (check engine light)

For getting the tranny codes - similar procedure as above - but you would connect pin "TAT" (instead of "TEN") to "GND".
The codes are explained in the manual (Page K-064)

The first step would be to get the codes and proceed from there.

Hi - I'm having the same problem (flashing hold light) and want to pull the codes myself, but being a novice at this I don't know where to find the pins... (and I can't access your first link since it needs a password). Where should I be looking?

The diagnostics box is under the hood - just behind the battery and above a big round drum (brake booster). It is a very small black box with the word "diagnostics" engraved on it - if you open it up the inside of the lid will have the pin names for the different pins in that box. If you connect the pins name GND and TEN (with a paperclip or some metal thing) the check engine light (in the instrument panel inside the vehicle) will flash to indicate the codes. The pattern of the flashing and how to decode it can be found in the online manual page F1-083. If you connect pins GND and TAT the HOLD light will flash to indicate tranny codes. For this procedure refer to online manual page K-063.

Should I disconnect the battery before doing this?

No - without battery there will be no lights.
Battery should be disconnected for resetting the codes (after you have fixed the problem)
