There is a very good reason why most of the B6 MX3 guys are going turbo, it is very hard and expensive to get good power out of the B6 engine in NA form. It is not as easy as say the Toyota 4AGE or Honda B16 motors to get decent HP numbers out of.
If you are determined to stay NA I would advise you look at the BP motor instead and mod that.

well no one;s actually built an all motor dohc, because of the expense. Most of the time that you see an all motor honda, toyota, & vw they drag outfit. A all motor can be done, the engine is basicly same as the dohc miata 1.6l.
The reason for the turbo, b6t, bp or bpt is the fact that its the most econimical way to get horse power.
I remeber when the b6t & the bpt swap were only talked about. I also remeber days when the klze was the only real upgrade for our cars

No I understand why you would want to boost to a turbo. But sense im building a Mx-3 for G5 Rally I need to keep it N/A. And yes it does cost a lot of money to get power.

The other issue is that the 1.6 DOHC NA isnt a very powerful motor stock, I mean you are starting at around 110hp as compared to 160hp for the Toyota 4AGE and the Honda B16A motors. So you pretty much end up spending a fortune trying to get 140-150hp if you are lucky.
Also the list of available mods for the 1.6 DOHC motor pale in comparison to what is offered for Honda, Toyota and Nissan motors, support for the BP engine is a lot better with stroker kits available and the fact you are starting with a 1.8 engine.

Trust me it is not worth going all motor with the b6!! I did it last year...and well i am now goin gwith boost!! There was not much of a difference from stock !!
I had
port/ polished head
header
forged pistons
shaved head .040"
underdrive pulley
alluminum flywheel
custom intake manifold
cold air intake
21/4" exhaust
hi-flow converter
stage 2 cams
adj. cam gears
adj. fuel pressure regulator
3 angle valves
bored throttle body
solide mounts
stage3 clutch
I didnt get the chance to the dyno, but i didnt feel that much of a difference..yes i felt it but it seems like there shoul dhave been more!! I guess the biggest thing was beating a Murcery murader!
Most of these mods will be extremely helpful with boosts, so i am looking for decent numbers that way instead!!!

8 valve B6 1.6 SOHC
Last Dyno run:
98.5 Whp , 118ft/lb torque (torque never drop below 90ft/lbs)
Cost of Mods? About $680 over the cost of regular maintanence items that had to be changed anyway. Secret to the power? Bigger in not better, straight through is not necessarily a power adder and a MIG welder helps a lot to.

Yoda, those are some damn good numbers for a B6 SOHC engine, I am fairly impressed. I have heard that surprisingly it is easier to extract more power from the 8valve SOHC B6 engine than the 16 valve SOHC, what are your thoughts on this?
Those numbers are also higher than any all motor NA MX3 DOHC 1.6 that I have seen, especially the torque figures.

NA DOHC B6? forget it. here are the engine mods i have:
completely re-built motor
ported & polished head w/ 3 angle valve job
2 1/4" straight pipe exhaust w/ 2 resonators
CAI
ACT clutch
i do all the regular maintinance (oil changes, etc)
i've spent over $2500 on that stupid engine, not including other areas i've spent money on, and all i get for a 1/4 mile:
18.7 @ 73mph
car was empty of everything except for 1/4 tank of gas (still have full interior, though)
i get so brokenhearted. i work on her and spend money on her, and i'm still slow
so, go turbo...i will be boosting within 2 years when i have a solid financial base after my summer graduation from UCF.
EDIT: i will be BP-T swapping...

Hey DJGypsy,
Something must have been wrong with your car or your launching abilities or there was some other issue since I ran a 16.7 with my DOHC when it was NA. This was with intake, exhaust with hi-flow cat, clutch and UR lightened pulley, didnt have any of the other mods that I have now.
Not sure if they is a difference power wise between the JSpec version and
the US version but 18.7 is definitely too slow for a 1.6 DOHC especially with the mods you had.

WOW thats slow. most stock MX3 RS's can get mid to low 17's. i ran a 19 flat with an ATX and a drilled out air box with oversized tires on my heavy a-- 17'' TSW VX1's. was it your first time running the 1/4

nope, i've been to the track about 12 times. launch is great, shifts are always right on, my reaction times over these 12 times average around 0.050 seconds. i'm 6'2", weigh ~180 lbs, so there isn't a fatso on board. i'm just gonna do the BPT swap. then it will actually be worth racing. in the meantime, she corners like a dream.

i dunno you guys i know my 93 sohc should only have 88 hp stock but i just bought it a few months ago and i really use the pedal alot and it deffinetely feels much more than 88 hp i can beat a lot of cars like a widebodied civic i raced and a bunch of other cars. only mods i have (that i know about) is a cold air intake and a muffler i think the previous owner might have done a timing chain type mod it kinda feels and sounds it.
