Hi, just signed up to this msg board today and i had a few questions about the Mazda 1995 MX-3 car...my sister's planning on getting it, so i'm just helping in the research process..anyways, onto the questions:
-We're looking to get (most likely) one of these cars that has the 4-cylinder engine in it...how fuel efficient is this engine for this year's model specificially? Fuel efficiency will be a key factor in whether we get this car or not.
-Also, how long do these engines last? the car we're looking at is a good 10 yrs old....just wondering how fast we could have to replace the engine if we buy this car.
Thanks

It really depends on the condition of the motor.
Automatic?
5-speed?
Miles?
Will you be the second owner?
Age of the previous driver?
is it stock?
If its completley stock and well taken care of, They will last for a while
My RSs finally decided to kick the bucket @ 188,000 miles. And I think its something simple, just have yet to locate the problem.

Driven lightly you can get upwards of 40mpg (canadian units) with the 1.6l sohc
If the car is well taken care of, they will go forever, mine has 244k on it, my dad drives a 92 protege with the 1.8 I4 sohc engine, and it has 364k on it, still runs awsome.
Try to find a seller that is proud of how well he takes care of his car. never miss a oil change and dont race em' and they will go forever

92 SOHC (smallest 4 cyl) I have 185k the car leaks alittle oil, but otherwise the engine is as strong as heck, tranny has 185k and still shifts perfectly, the auto trannies don't last too long, i'm thinking from people on here it goes out around 140k for them...as for fuel efficiency...when i first bought the car I was getting around 32-34mpg in the city and around 40 for the highway, so yes the mx-3's even the v6 get GREAT gas mileage....tell us the type and the year and the mileage and we'll be able to tell you how much to pay for it...it's a 95, so if it's a 4cyl it's got a DOHC which is 110hp compared to the 88hp the SOHC has
*EDIT*
oh one more thing to add, I've had my car since 125k...so for the past 60k miles it's been driven HARD, i redline almost every gear, every where i go....does that prove to be a strong engine?

With 33$ of 100.9 fuel, I can do 270 km in the city. Pretty much the average MX-3 when I check other topic.
