Well I got another alt belt on and its still squealing... this time I made sure it was exactly the right tension, but this time I noticed that the upper pulley for the alt belt was getting hot.. what could cause this??? I think its what caused the initial problem with the original belts before I started this campaign of fixing the car.. let me know what you think

Proabaly a bad bearing in the tensioner is causing the belt to heat up and loosen, then slip off.
Get a new tensioner or a new bearing for the tensioner. To get a new bearing you need to press the bearing out of the tensioner and look for the model number. You can call around and find a new one with the model number.

A common problem for squealing belts is pulley itself. If you replaced the belts and it is still squealing, the pulley could have a glaze on it. If it does have the glaze, it will make the pulley hot because the belt is actually slipping on the pulley and if it goes too long, the belt could wear and break prematurely. I replaced my belts a couple of times and didn't understand why the belts were wearing so quick and this was the reason.
If you replaced the belt and it was okay for a couple of days, chances are that the belt stretched and just has to be retightened. I hope this helps.

More commonly the groove in the pulley becomes worn especially ones for a V belt. The side of the groove become concave instead of flat reducing the gripping surface of the belt to as little as a band about 1/8" wide instead of 1/2" wide. On several of my cars I've had to take the pulleys out and chuck it up in a lathe take a light cut off the sides of groove to make them flat again and stop the belt from slipping.
