I have a friend that has owned all the incarnations of that platform.. he loves them.. he has also dumped over $70 grand into 4 of them over the years.. (the others he uses as daily drivers) He always seems to be upgrading something on them. I would have to say based on his experiences that they are not the most reliable car out there. Then again.. he does drive them hard too. Probably just about like any other car.. find one thats been well maintained with decent service records and it will probably be fine.. keep in mind that the word "Turbo" on a used car usually means it has been put through the wringer at some point in time. Cheers

How many miles are on it? Its probably fine.. though I tend to shy away from high mileage AWD setups.. they are expensive to repair if something goes wrong. Please keep in mind that I am looking at this from my own personal point of view.. when I buy a used car that is intended for daily use.. In my own mind I try to find the weak points of the car. Why not see if there are any TSI AWD websites out there like there is this one for the MX-3? I can tell you that if I had known about the MX-3's notorious weak ATX issue.. I probably would have waited and bought a 5 spd. Might be a good idea to see if the Talons have weak points like that. Good hunting.

I owned a '94 talon ... it was the ES .. nothing special
Have been contemplating on selling the MX for one actually but this one would be between '96-'98 TSI AWD.
I have wanted for so long to have again another red Mazda which I have now ... but I really liked the talon .. so I don't know what to do...
I bought in '96 the talon was just 3 yrs old and had already 2 timing belts replaced ... if you got one change the timing belt ..
Good luck!

I have a buddy who ownes an older one. He takes care of it (well his Dad does since he is the service manager at a dealership). Anyway, it spends more time inthe shop than it does driving.
Weak computer system, AC system stinks, it leaks oil all over and the turbo has gone out once. The AWD seems pretty stout since he hasn't done much to it that I know of. The tranny can take a good amount of abuse.

im driving one right now as a winter car, i have been driving it for since october and its been an amazing car the whole time. its a blast to drive around, plenty of power, good gas mileage too. i havnt to fix a single thing. doesnt leak anything, doesnt burn oil, for a 92 everything works great. id greatly suggest buying one. to be honest its been a much more reliable car them my mx lol.

From what I understand (although I've never owned one) the turbos on the talon tend to break rather easily. I've heard from more than a few owners that although the turbos can make good power, they breeak faster than peanut brittle.

then upgrade the turbo to a bigger one and make more power

also add a turbo timer to make it last long.

I almost bought one. AWD 4g63 is awesome!
You can add 100 hp for <500 bucks. There was an article in superstreet that told how to do it too...

I hate DSM's.
They are the most stubborn cars. I have a red 92 non turbo. Bought it for 200$ as a running winter beater. Got it home and now it will not run, I have checked everything. And it will not run. The body is perfect, it just will not run.
