Not sure if fuel system or electrical problem?

So my MX-3 (1993 4cyl 1.6L manual trans) has been running horribly lately, especially when under load such as going up hill or just pushing on the gas hard. Also it doesn't do it much at idle or even when I'm in neutral and rev it high, seems to only have symptoms when in gear. It hesitates and kind of backfires (I also have a bad muffler), sometimes constantly, other times I can go quite a few miles with no symptoms. Someone told me it may be because I was using ethanol and it may be clogging my fuel injectors. Well I started making sure I wasn't using gas with ethanol and same problems so not sure what is wrong. I'm thinking either faulty fuel pump or clogged fuel filter. Wasn't sure if bad spark plugs or O2 sensor could cause these symptoms either? Any ideas what could be wrong?

hmm i once had the same symptoms happen to me but i was driving my mom's ford focus. the car would hesitate and the revs were messed. turned out to be the fuel pump.
