Winters here, Project idea?

Well, I now officially pulled the car in my shop for winter storage, And im thinking engine swap.
I just got a MINT 92 protege GT that was in my friends family since new. They only drove it for 1 year and it was stored on and unter tarps in the back of a heated barn/garage for 12 years because the person lost their liscence to DUI and recently found out they will never get their liscence again (sucks for them, good for me!) Car has exatly 11,993km on the odometer..Bearly even broken in. Only problem is the car has not moved or ran for 12 years. I used CAA to take it to my place in the garage. First thing was drain the oil, fill in up with fresh regular oil, threw some oil down the cylinders. Replaced tranny oil, brake fluid, power steering fluid, antifreeze and had to get rid of a full tank of 12 year old gas. Got the shop nice and warm and tried to start it.... I bearly touched the key after letting the pump prime and the engine was running (lots of smoke due to the oil I put in the cylinders) Car runs like a dream now...and significanlty more power than my mx-3. Now Im thinking motor swap. As far as I can tell this motor will fit, but will the tranny fit into an mx-3? I want to get rid of my automatic transmission. From the looks of it this engine can have some serious power potential compared to the K8. I dont want to put new pads, shoes drums and rotors on the protege...plus i think it will need brake lines due to the corrosion on them. The body is ok but still shows signs of being in a moist area..plus the protege looks gay! what do you guys think?

You have a 4 banger Protogay and a V6 MX-3. That is not a good swap to do since the BP is not going to go into the MX-3 GS without changing alot of stuff to accomidate the 4 banger. If you want a swap, just get a DE or ZE and put th at into the MX-3 and keep the Protogay stock as a dailey driver.

What do you want out of the Protege? Is it stick as is? I'd see if they make a bolt on turbo kit for it. Otherwise, KLZE your Protege and run Megasquirt computer on it to get your fuel economy up.

the protege needs brakes, brake lines, rotors, drums, tires, muffler, possibly a rad ( i havent found out where its leakin from) And it needs shocks and it has a broken rear spring. Although the car looks really really good, I think sitting for so long has taken its toll. Im not sure I want to get into replacing all that...and this Is all I can see thats wrong with it, i havnt had it in for a saftey yet. I was talking to a guy that drives a 95 mx-3 and also owns a preformance shop. He said the 4 banger GT engine is about 125 HP (nearly same as k8 ) but has a hell of alot more power potential compared to the K8. Plus my k8 has 250,000 km on it with an automatic tranny

Protege is stick. Im kinda in a bind...should I or shouldnt I?

1. There is no Protege GT made in 92.
2. GT's come with 4 disc's so saying you need shoes/drums makes you look foolish.
The K8 can be swapped for the BP with a fex extra parts, but the AT to MT conversion sucks hardcore.

Car is a protege GT, made in march 91' (as it says on the inside of the door)...I was told it was a 92, but for now all i know is the manufacture date until i get the ownership mailed to me. So, the engine is a far cry from being worthy of a swap? My k8 is a sad excuse for an engine but its still goes so I cant complain.

MX-SLICK;
It appears that you have a pile of rides in your stable as it is. Perhaps the list of apparent defficiencies you have noted may make this an overwhelming project or at your perspective very expensive. As you have mentioned you have stumbled onto a unique find. That in itself should be a motivator to reserrect it to a greater potential. I think if you were to pose this same query as far as it being a viable project to the Club Protege BB, you'd get an overwhelming response and support to go forward with it. As a member here you must be quite aware that there are a lot more resources available for the Protege wrt replacement, performance, and after market parts. The problem areas you descibe are not insurmountable and I believ it to be a worthwhile venture to persue. Like others have mentioned and what you'll eventually come to realize from the Protege BB, is that there is great potential with that Protege that does not require the swapping of a ZE in it. I believe that there are MazdaSpeed products that still available for it also. As far as outward appearances go, that to can be easily changed since there's J-Spec options available for transplant as well as after market cosmetic items. FWIW, when all is said and done, you'll find that it'll be pretty cheap to operate insurance-wise because it is a Protege. Ask me I know - my 02 Protege insurance is cheaper than my 92 MX - go figure. As you've already seen posted, if in fact your not up to the challenge, there are those willing to take it off your hands in a heartbeat. Tough decisions - good luck.

As Mike Moss sits quietly in the corner waiting for the opportunity to add another Prot to the stable ......LOL

hmmm

With only 11,993km how the f--- would you have a broken spring need a new muffler and a leaking rad, not to mention the other s---! this is such a bulls--- story.. I really dont know what to say but do your research before you break something!

Bullpoo story
Completely concievable if the car never got rustproofed, was subject to a damp environment for 12 years and had never been moved for all of that time. Unprotected/unpainted metal items could rust excessively faster if not used. How good would a set of rotors look like if subjected to that moisture for 12 years and never got used - nuff said?
