My respect for police just went way up

Today on my way to school I was late...I don't lik being late.

I did what the typical teenager would do and started speeding.

I admit, not smart....but I did it.

I was going 75 in a 55. Yeah, I know...I don't need to be flamed or anything.

Anyway, a cop saw me.
He was heading towards me coming from the other direction. As he passed me he clocked me at 75...pulled a U and pulled me over.
He asked me for my license, and asked what my driving record was like...I said it was clean, as it is. He told me making it to school on time was not worth a $200 ticket. I didn't even tell him thats why I was speeding, I didn't say anything at all about it.
He let me go with a warning!
I was doing 20 over, and got a warning...in a car that looks like ours, with me being 18?

I'm thankful that all policemen are not asses who are out to get us.

Everyone can be sure I'll be doing the speed limit tomorrow.
With an added respect for cops, I might add.

Some cops are very cool.. I took a turn a little quick the other day.. wasent speeding but just a fast turn through an intersection.. A cop stopped me and he was a cool guy. He was like "Ive seen you around before.. You got a really nice car." Apparently he owns a celica with some stuff done to it, AND he has tinted windows (which are illegal here). I asked him about those tickets now and if they still give them out.. He said it was pretty much whatever cop you get stopped by will be the one who decides between the $150 2 point ticket or the $20 ticket.. When I asked him what one he gives out he said he dosent.. A very cool guy!

Same here

Cops over here are too busy pulling over people that do small things instead of looking for people doing big things like racing or vandalizing.
Its no surprise though, here in Utah that got a quote that they have to make by the end of the month. A certain number of tickets and it dosent matter what the offenses are.

One small thing that bothers me about them is that they get over-paid and all they have to do is go to Police Academy for 2 years FOR FREE without going to college.

There is alot more reasons why I dont like cops but I am just going to make this short and stop right here

I've lived in a small town all my life, and dont' know what cops are like in other places but here...they are bored.

They don't have anything else to do except traffic in my town. Anything. Not exaggerating at all

I go to work at 4:30 AM. There were cops parked in parking lots just WAITING for there to be one or two cars to drive by so they can check their speed. There is literally nothing else here for them to do.

Thats why I was so suprised to find one that was actually intelligent enough (even thouhg I admit, I deserved one-even if I was just speeding to make it to school) to think about it before they automatically handed out tickets.

Two years?? Holy cow, it's only 6 months for the Academy here... Of course, the Columbus Police Department is one of the hardest to get onto... It has taken my roommate about 2 years of psych evals, physicals, polygraphs, etc, to be accepted into the Academy this December.

Over-paid? Cops arent over-paid in the slightest.. they put their lives on the line daily to maintain the more or less civilized world we live in. I dont think its possible to be over-paid in a job where you are shot at. Over-paid are professional athletes, actors, lawyers and politicians... These are the people that entertain us, sue us and screw us.. yet we pay them millions and most cops never see 6 figures in their yearly salaries.

Now dont get me wrong.. the majority of cops I have met are power drunk insecure bastards that have serious inferiority issues. Thats why a lot of them become cops to begin with.. but hey.. maybe thats natures way of weeding out some of the bad genes. But as much as I dislike their attitudes on average.. I would gladly pay them more to take the bullet with my name on it. Just my two cents..

I'll agree with you on that one. My husband's getting out of the military in January (if they don't stoploss him and send him to Iraq again) and is moving back into the civilian sector. He jokes about if an employer interviews him about why he no longer has his old job, it'd be that reason. He would like to go to work and not get shot at or prepare for people trying to kill him.

Yah, getting shot at is no fun, I was with Canada Customs for two years, the first time I got shot at was the day I quit, cause nobody had a good enough reason why someone would have a loaded 9mm Sig Sauer on a commercial jet after 9/11... Have a cousin in the Marines right now and he's over in Iraq, and another friend in the USAF who's "eagerly" awaiting his deployment to that very same shithole...

As for cops, I've worked with many of them, and I'll agree with all the things said here, some are power mongers, some are very cool. And there's the average bunch in between. They do a job that not too many people want, and most of the time they do it well. And I'm not sure how much the cops make in the US, but here in Canada they are severely underpaid, even with over-time and paid duties.

wow you guys got some high priced tickets.... I got busted for a 63 in a 30.... that was only a $170 ticket.... well the cop was wondering what the red pip in the back of my seat was for i told him for my intake that i was makeing. After that the cop was telling me to just take it easy and if you want to run her go to it on the highway... ummm so basicly go speed on the highway.... ok.

When i had my old beater i got pulled over and he asked how fast i was (i no the guy he was like all super troopers style hat and everything lol) "you no how fast you where going" (40 mph zone) "ummm....50" "no...48" "ummm...ok" the guy was just playing with me he was freaking me out.... He let me go with out a ticket.

Heh over here the cops just don't care...Example

The other day i blew by a cop on a back road on my way home after work at about eleven o'clock eleven-thirty doing about 70 in a 40 or 45(can't seem to remember) and he didn't even bother to start his car....

With that out of the way...I was in Jersey with my sister and her boyfriend. Them in the front, me in the back, my sisters boyfriend driving. A cop was going to oppsite direction, saw us, clocked us going, i think, 12 mph over the speed limit AND TURNED AROUND TO STOP US. This is in a suburb about three hours outside of Jersey city by the way. Damn suburbian cops =)

Comming back from a meet a couple of weeks ago i was pulled over.
Of the 5 tickets i could have gotten he only gave me 2 both of which were easy fix it tickets. He told me that my car sounded good, unlike most of the other imports around here, but that he still had to give me a ticket because it was to loud. :D

This must be the most discussed topic of any forum. (non car related)
I have also seen both ends of the spectrum. When first dating my now 6 yr GF, I was racing two Camaros. Got up to 135 in a 55, and was in the lead. I was stoked that I was kicking both of them, but just then a cop passed by going the other way (Georgia State Trooper) He ended up giving me a ticket for 88 which was 1 mph under the take you to jail speed. It cost me a decent amount and I never sped like that gain. (lsson learned)
Then a few months agoa I got pulled over goin to a buddies house on the local cruising road (near the mall) while driving my 00' Celica (no mods). Two cop cars pinned me in a parking lot like I was a wanted fellon and then proceded to give me crap abou why I turned off the main road and into the parking lot (that was not 1000' feet away from the main roadand the first turn-off spot from the road I turned onto) I wasn't speeding, playing load music, was in a plain car, and minding my own business. I told him that I didn't want to congest the main road and honestly didn't think he was after me and just wasnted ot get out of his way. I decided that I'd give him a piece of my mind thinking that I hadn't done anything to get a ticket for and knew that it would piss him off. After a few non-cussing statements about his intellgence and attitude he gave me a ticket for a lisence plate frame and let me go.
The judge later appologized for the harrassment (without me telling her the story) and threw the ticket out. She also said that she wished they could charge the cops for wasting her time and mine for such stupidity.
Loved it :D 8)
