Ok, I've read numerous accounts of which VAF and ECU to use...

Here it is..

I have a 1992 Mazda MX-3 GS (obd1, I guess)

I bought the motor from a 1997 Mazda 626, KL-DE, I also bought the VAF, KL-02..

Which ECU do I need to make the engine run right, most power, and best air/fuel ration and everything, Basically i dont want it to run like the K8, but I also dont wanna melt it...

PLEASE HELP ME

I've posted this numerous times before. I'm not sure why you're not successful with the search function.
KL01 ECU compliments the KL02 VAF.

Only thing I can really say about this is that I have a 93' Mazda Mx-3 with a model # kl02 VAF and the K8 stock ECU still in the car, with a KLDE engine installed. The car runs great. Could it run better with the actual KLDE ecu? I don't know. Does it run atleast good as it is? yes. The only way I'll be able to say which works better is when I get the actual KLDE ecu and run it in the car, and compare the two and possibly dyno the two. Again, this is just my own experience up to this point, hope it helps some.

I cant find my paperwork on ECU's right now, but a while ago i was researching which ECU to use, wasnt sure if i was gonna kee OBD2 or swap down to OBD1, so i covered all bases and bought both.

My OBD1 ECU came out of a 94 MX-6 and is a KL57.

If your car is a 92 is is def OBD1 (3 connectors vs. 4 connectors)

IIRC you can use pretty much any MX-6 or 626, 3 connector ECU along with your KL02.

I think i would go with a MX-6 since they were a little sportier than the 626. Not sure if there is any real dif though.

g/l

*edit* KL57 is for a 2.5l MTX

Get the appropriate probe/mx6 ecu for your year (94) with KL01 vaf and KL injectors.

Just like it would be in a PGT bay... with all correct VRIS points and everything.

It doesn't matter as long as it's from a 93 or 94 and it's from any manual 'KL' engine. A 94 ECU would be prefereable as your engine won't have the third coolant sensor. A 94 ECU will save you from the effort of swapping the coolant neck over from your old engine. Mine says KL08, but there are other ecu #'s for that year. If it takes you a while to find the right ECU, the old KL ECU and the KL02 VAF will work for now just fine.

OMG, had no idea there were so many ECU's for same 2.5L.
KL01
KL28
KL07
KL57
There must be unique properties to the differnt types as Lakersfan1 has described. I learned something new again. :)

I'll keep a log of ECU part numbers:

OBD-I:

PGT ECU's:
'93 MTX: KL07 (CA=KL07 18 881C)
'94 MTX: KL48, KL50 (CA),
'95 MTX: KL89, KL90 (CA) [dark gray connectors], I also found some evidence of early model '95's with ECU's labeled KL48-18881-C

'93 ATX: KL07
'94 ATX: KL48

MX-6 ECU's:
'93: KL01, KL03 (CA)
'94: KL57 (CA MX6) [bright yellow connectors], also KL55 18 881B (Federal)
'95: KL86, KL85 (no distinction between ATX and MTX, no consistency between A or B suffix)

KLZE ECU's (must be used in combination with JE50 VAF):
MTX=KL31
ATX=KL36

OBD-II

'96 ATX=KLD1

There are even different versions of the same year, Look for A, B, C or D on the second code on the case.
