Bought a BP today...

I just found and purchased a BP today at a local junkyard. It's got 45k on it and looks clean as hell. I pick it up tomorrow...I can't wait!

So...I think I will be keeping my auto tranny for awhile...not enough time on my hands to be without a car and do both the engine and the tranny swap. So anyone have an extra ATX BP ECU and harness layin around? Not having much luck finding anything local, but I still have the other 1/2 of the phone book to go through...

And I meant to say...I got the engine for $200. It was from a small hole in the wall junkyard...they just didn't know what they had. It's out of an EGT...

I have decided that I would like to document the swap with pictures and such.

I currently have a '93 SOHC automatic.

For the record...

- The new motor is a BP out of a Ford Escort GT
- I will be swapping in the manual tranny out of the same car
- I will be using the BP ECU that matches the motor (it's labled BP09)
- For wiring, I will be using the harness from a manual MX-3 RS
- For installing the motor, I will be using Typhoonk's write-up in the 4-cyl FAQ

After I get back from picking up the motor, I will post some pics of my stock engine bay as well as the new BP motor.

So for the next week or so, I will be cleaning up the motor and replacing hoses and belts. Then I will move on to the gaskets and plugs/wires. Since my MX is a daily driver, I don't think I'll yank my old motor until I'm ready to start swapping parts over to the new BP.

I still have to source an ECU and harness for an automatic. The one that was with the engine was a manual, and as stated above, I'd like to keep my auto tranny for the time being...especially since I just had it replaced a few months ago.

So you went for the BP eh? Not bad, you can get good gains from them. As far as parts you need, if you need something email me and Ill check the yards down here in WPB.

By the way, im the guy at the meet with the dented up mx-3. In case ya didnt recognize the name.

Cant wait to see how it works out for ya. Any plans on turbo or are you keeping it N/A?

Yeah, I remember you.

I just couldn't pass up the deal I got on it...$200 wasn't that bad. I just had to get it.

To answer your question, I'll probably go turbo in the future, but for now, I'm going to take a little time to clean up and build up the engine. It's really clean anyway, but I'd like to do some of the basics (headers, etc...) before I even drop it in the car. After that, yeah, I'd like to put a turbo on it.

Oh yeah...that reminds me...I DO need the ECU and harness from a Protege LX with an automatic tranny. As stated above, I'm going to wait awhile for the tranny swap, so I need an auto ECU and harness for now. I can't find anything around Tampa...

I found an ECU today...Got it for $75. $25 added to that for the passenger side motor mount and some other interior trim pieces, so $100 total spent today. But here's the best part: I also picked up an alternator from a GS...and the guy at the yard didn't care about it I guess, because it wasn't included in the price. I even asked him twice..."that's WITH the alt?" and he said it was, but he wasn't really listening. So because of his ignorance, I got a free alternator with my purchase today!

I took the valve cover off to replace the gasket, and the inside looks really nice, so I had to post a pic...

OK.

Since I couldn't find an automatic ECU anywhere, and I got a Manual ECU for less than a steal with a bunch of other parts I needed, I will attempt to use the manual ECU for the motor and keep the stock ECU wired up to just control the tranny. It will have to share some sensors, but should only function for shifting purposes...nothing else.

Someone feel free to chime in with your .02 if this won't work (or if the BP09 ECU will just HAPPEN to control an auto tranny as well ;))
