hey gang,

sorry to bother, but i was hopin i could ask some knowledgable guys quick question about a non MX-3... if not, please feel free to tell me to piss off...

my parents' car, '95 grand marquis, has been makin a high pitched whine when it runs. i'm tryin to sell this beast for them, and everybody keeps askin what's up with the whining, so hopefully i can correct it and get it outta here!!

i thought it was the power steering, but that actually appears to be ok. i'm pretty sure its the transmission, because the whine goes away once i get up to about 30-40 mph, and it sounds like it gets louder on the shifts.

i was hopin you could tell me if that sounds accurate, if you thought a tranny flush would help, and if thats somethin i would be able to do myself at home.

Does the tranny slip at all? Does it whine when it is in nuetral? Check the fluid level (with the engine running, Park or Nuetral), and condition of the fluid. If its brown, or smells burnt, thats a big problem.

If you are certain the whining is coming from the tranny, its probably about to croak. A lot of the mid-90's Ford rwd cars use the AODE tranny, I have heard plenty of complaints about it. I replaced one about a year ago that was whining in a Mustang. The rebuild is starting to do it now too.

You can try the flush and new fluid to see it that helps. That really needed to be done 2 years ago, not now. But it couldnt hurt.

A replacement tranny is only a junkyard away.

it actually drives just fine... i think once in awhile it seems like it's a little stuck... like revving really high and wont shift, but then it kicks in.

it does whine in neutral... pretty much through all the low gears then shuts up when ya pick up speed.

is the flush somethin i can do easy on my own? never done it before, but jiffy lube charges like 100 bucks! so i'm assuming its tougher than an oil change based on that..

i'm actually tryin to sell this thing for my folks, but that whine scares off all the buyers!! so, hopefulyl a quick fix rather a new tranny

New filter and fluid change.. do NOT have a trans shop do a power flush to the trans.. Just drain the fluid and replace the filter and refill. Likely the trans is toast in any case.. but possible the filter is just plugged. Should swap that out before driving it anymore. But likely you should practice up on a scottish accent so that you can yell

"Get beck keptin!! She's gonna blow!!"
