ZE dynoed, Running rich need advise.

So I just got my ze dynoed and what a disapointment. Only 124hp at the wheels. Well that was because I'm running way to rich. The higher the rpms go the richer the air/fuel mix goes. So now I need to find out why. The guy who dynoed it said that I could change the spark plugs gap, try a smaller gap. But what else could I do and why is it running rich to start with? BTW I'm running 94 octane gas, if that has anything to do with it.

Although you don't advertise what IM or VAF you are using, we have very similar set-ups. I sure as hell would love to find out the answer to your question also. I'm really tired of all the multitude of adjustments and TPS resets etc that I've gone through just to chase my tail. Mileage is pitifull, exhaust pipes are pitch black and I've achieved a somewhat OK idle but this really sucks. I sometimes wonder if it was all worth it. One should not have to jump through this many hoops to get a user friendly ride. Not going to pass emmissions test in this condition.
MX-3 Money, I hope someone comes up with some magical answers, we could use it!!

Only thing I can think of that could cure this problem would be to go with an aftermarket standalone Fuel Management system. Megasquirt is used by quite a few of the probe guys apparently, and has worked well for those guys. Its not that expensive.. (cheaper than a KL31 ECU) and if it works out well.. you can always e-bay your KL31's and possibly make more on them than you originally paid. Just a couple of copper pieces for you to think about.

I noticed that you are running a "custom cold air intake", as do I. Does your intake incorporate (connect to) the larger vaccum lines that run to each valve cover. This is the large vaccum line that attaches to the mid-point of the OEM flex tube between the VAF and the Throttle Body. Mine does not. On mine, those 2 lines are fed by a stand alone minnie gauze type filter. I wonder if that may be a source of a rich mixture. Are those lines of a vaccum type to begin with? Just a shot in the dark here, any thoughts???

first question..are you SURE you have a klze?
40whp under what you suppose to have..seems strange..I doubt running rich will cause THAT much of a drop.
kl31 1a1 heads ?
you are even under what a KLDE is suppose to be

Found a interesting FAQ on MX6.com about the KLZE.. lots of info there.. long FAQ/thread too. Might be worth checking out for those that are having issues...

Just a heads up..

Oxygen Sensors maybe?
Mine are still the origs from a 92 gs

. I also passed Ontario Emmissions for the 1.8 with my ze, but I was running the 1.8 ecu and 2.5 vaf for the test.
I have not really axperienced any of these major issues with my ze. I think it was worth the swap for sure. It keeps me occupied, gives me something to fidle with. And it has run excellent for the last 3 years, and its faster than the 1.8.
So stick with it. Maybe its a combination of many things, like plugged air filter, bad plugs, plugged cat/exhaust, faulty ecu, bad fuel pressure regulator, faulty injectors, improper adjustment of tps/idle settings, throttle linkage not operating properly (does the throttle body butterfly open all the way when the pedal is on the floor). And more, but my wife says its time to eat now
Let us know how it goes.

Still running my K8 ones.

Was still running rich with the 2.5 ECU (KL01) and the 2.5 VAF (KL02).

I'm very jealous. Who did your install of the ZE? I would like to have someone who's got things in order with their ZE to look at mine for comparison and have a meeting of the minds. Tim are you up for a visit from me in a weekend or two?
So stick with it. Maybe its a combination of many things, like plugged air filter
humongus clean K&N cone filter , bad plugs
brand new, plugged cat/exhaust
unable to determine - how do you know?, faulty ecu
previously mentioned , bad fuel pressure regulator
haven't confirmed yet , faulty injectors
unable to confirm - don't know how, improper adjustment of tps/idle settings
done too many times to count - chasing my tale on that one, throttle linkage not operating properly
appears to (does the throttle body butterfly open all the way when the pedal is on the floor)
approx 90% . And more, but my wife says its time to eat now
No time to eat!! must fix car..LOL
Let us know how it goes.
definitely, I would not wish this on anyone else

Interesting topic, I wonder what would happen if you drop the fuel pressure a bit. This is the first I've heard of people having this type of problem with the proper ECU/VAF/Manifold it doesn't make any sense at all...

Yes 100% klze, I checked the head codes about 20 times before i bought it, to make sure. But regardless of that the rich mixture is still the big problem.

Normally vaccum related, spark related.

I'll do that. How do I do it now that there is no CEL function with the KL31 ECU????

John.. I think you can pull CEL codes without the CEL Light by using a Test light across TEN & GND instead of a jumper. Not positive about this.. but I think I read that in the online shop manual.
