Ok..before I get ya'll  at me..listen up..On my brothers honda 91 1.5L HB SOHC Dual Point Fuel Injection (slow as s---) we (I) swapped the honda 1.6 SOHC V-TEC head and yank the DPFI and swapped the intake mani to Multiport Fuel Injection..and of course had to wire up the injectors and v-tec..etc..but this has been done over & over with the honda maniacs. I havent heard this being done on a mx-3 but i'm sure it is possible..Check out this link: http://members.aol.com/solomiata/MX5Engine.html

It is not possible to swap the heads from SOHC to DOHC.

You can, however, drop in a 1.8L DOHC from a 90-94 Mazda Protege.

You can swap heads but the amount of time/money/work to do it you could have put two DOHC engines in. If you want to do it all the power to you. People have swapped SOHC to DOHC head on proteges and have had good luck. Most of them did it because the had an extra DOHC head sitting around. The didn't go out and buy one. It also matters what your plans are. If you plan to build the engine up at all for either boost or N/A then just go with the DOHC BP. If you are just doing it to mess around and practice mateing stuff go for it. Most Mazda B series engine do match up with curtain things but not all things like most honda engines....

Hmm... It was my understanding that the oil journals and the coolant thing-a-majigs didnt line up.

Oh well- if they do, good luck.

here we go again  . don't you know that for the money and time you'll spend on swapping the head, you could easily do the bp for less money? not only does the bp is a better motor but much easier to do. take everyones advice and just do the bp. you'll thank us later. i did my swap for less than 500 bucks and is well worth it.

Yeah to do the Head swap, you would need to swap the ECU, the wiring harness, intake manifolds, and all kinds of other stuff.

Its not easy.
