What color is the smoke that is coming out? If its all white smoke.. likely you have a blown head gasket and coolant is leaking into one or more of your cylinders. Do a compression check on the engine. Also check and see if your coolant level is dropping. If you did blow the head gasket.. make sure you take the head to a machine shop and have it inspected before reinstalling it. If the head is warped or cracked you will only waste your money buying new gaskets and trying to reinstall it.

You may not need a new head.. depends on how badly warped the head is.. if that machinist told you it wasnt that bad.. assuming he knows his stuff.. likely you can have the head "Trued" or "Decked" to level it off. This would then allow you to use the head again without buying a new or remanufacturered one. This is also assuming neither the head or the block is cracked.
