Trany Swap

Post by Trevor »

I'm thinking of buying a 96 Mx-3 GS but it's automatic and what I was wondering is if it was possible to swap my 92 gs manual to the car. I'm just not sure if it is a direct swap or if I would have to get a new ecu or nething like that.
I know I would have to put in the clutch pedle and everyting else I just want to know if it can be done without getting a new ecu thank guys.

You'd definitely have to change your ECU to a manual GS ECU. Everything else is kind of easy.

There were no 96 GS's sold in the States. There were a bunch sold in Canada though. Swapping an engine from OBDII to I is a PITA. Swapping from a OBDII ATX to OBDI MTX would be a Major PITA.

How is swapping the transmission gonna affect obdI/obdII ? Just as long as he uses the relevant ecu he should be okay no?

A little confusion here.. What country are you in Eggo? In the US/Canada, all GS's had a 6cyl. There was no such thing as a GS package, without the 6cyl, unless one or two came off the line as a MAJOR fluke. Now, in other countries, there's all kinds of other badges/names. As for the swap, I would say if you get an MTX that comes off any of the FWD B6 4cyl's, a matching year ECU for your MX3 (to it's year, which I believe you said 96), and you get all the parts a manual has that the ATX doesn't, it should all swap just fine. (given there're some little wiring issues you will run into, like tricking the neutral safety and reverse light switches etc) Unfortunately I do not believe anybody has done up a writeup for an MX3 specific ATX to MTX conversion, and I'd say the majority of the people who have done it, have done so on the 6cyl model. You can find very similiar swap pages for the 6cyl on Probetalk's A-team board, which I'd bet would give you a little bit of a hand, but since you are doing the 4cyl, I'd say they'd just be kind of a rough process proceedure help for you. Good luck.

There is no need to swap the ECU. Everyone I have heard of doing this swap, myself included, has used the ATX ECU with no problems. There are some minor wiring modifications to make, but not related to the ECU.

(My comments assume it is actually a V6. If it's a 4 then I have no idea about the ECU's.)

Just wanted to confirm what Cap is saying, you dont need to Swap ECUs, autos come with TCMs. You would need to re-wire the reverse lights and etc., but no ecu swap is needed.
