are strut bars just for show for under the hood? or do they actually have a purpose? what do the bars do to the car?

strut bars help strengthen the chassis. When you are taking a corner, you know that feeling like the car is swaying? It is often times the shocks going down and the chassis flexing. The strut tower bar goes over the engine to strengthen the front half of the chassis and the strut bar goes in the trunk to strengthen the rear. It helps prevent flex.
When used in conjuction with good shocks and springs, it makes for a very stiff corner and therefore a tighter corner.
They are a must for autocross, but not really neccessary for drag.
Hope this helps.
