Setting timing with underdrive pulley..

Post by bubbaflaat »

I'm I the only person who dreads setting timing on K-series engines? Like there is zero room to stick my huge melon down there to see it. Plus I have a UR underdrive pulley. I must be going blind but I always just kinda get it in the middle of the adjustment path and just let the ECU do the rest.. Is there an easier way?!

I thought ECU auto adjusts it so you cant really set timing

I thought so to, but aren't you still spose to set the timing in diagnostic mode?

If you didn't move the disty then you won't have to worry about the timing. The Pulley is keyed so it will slide on the same place as the orginal. When changing pulley's your only removing the 2 acessory belts not the timing belt.

But if you did move the disty you have to have the TEN and GND Jumpered. Then when the car is at normal operationg temperature, just push aside the power steering hose and stick the timing light in there. Usually helps if you have two people doing this. One with the light, one moving the disty. Got get it to 10 Degrees.

I believe he's talking about lining up the notches on the timing belt with the cams/crank. I found it difficult to do even with the motor out of the car. As for the UD pully.. does it not having a timing mark?

Every time I try to advance my timing, the stupid bastard puts it back to the stock settings. I don't bother anymore :(

NO NO NO, i'm sorry if I wasn't clear. But I was just complaining about how hard it is to set the timing since its hard to see. You can only put the crank pulley on one way. I think the mark on the underdrive pulley is just smaller..

Ya, I thought the K-series engines all did this when you try to advance their timing. B-series engines could be advanced though.

Is there no way around this? I think i've seen people say that they advance it in diagnostic mode and then it stays... ?

I found that if I did not set the base timing with the the diagnostics jumpered I would not pass the smog test at idle.
As far as I know the only proven method of changing the timing, without exrternal electronics, is to redrill the mounting holes on the underdrive pulleys signal plate. Someone on the Probetalk board has done this successfully.
He did some tests to make sure the timing stayed were he set it and last I heard it was still good.

I found that painting the stationary plastics timing mark and the cranks notch with white nail polish works great and last a long time. You could also use white out but it doesn't last as long.
