I have a new Presso arriving today, it apparently has a blown starter motor, i'm intending to replace it with my good one, has anyone done this? and is there anything i should watch for? does it matter that my car is an auto and the new car is manual?

Doing a starter in these is easy as it has great
access, right at the front of the Gearbox.

As to weather both starter motors are the same?
No idea, the biggest giveaway if they are differnt would be the teeth count on the starter.

In the UK, there are 3 starters for V6 MX-3s, two are 1.4kW and one is 1.7kW. They all use the same pinion. There is no indication that they vary from MTX to ATX; I reckon it's just product improvement.

Does the gearbox have to be in neutral or it doesn't totally matter? Can I bang the old starter with a hammer slightly to get it out ? It's pretty seized and I can't get it out, even after spraying some WD-40.

The gearbox makes no difference when doing the starter. The starter engages the flywheel. Nothing to do with the guts of the tranny. Yes you can bang on the starter a bit to get it off. Dont go crazy, but tapping it with your socket wrench should be enough to get it off.

I will make a note here in this old thread that apparently there is a difference in the starters for ATX & MTX GS cars. RS cars.. the starters are apparently the same.

Yeah, the starters are way different from ATX to MTX in the GS, they don't even mount in the same place. I am in the middle of doing an MTX swap, the ATX starter mounts in back of the engine while the MTX starter mounts in front.

I found that out the same way when I did my ATX to MTX swap ;) They also bolt up to the bellhousings different from the look of them.. the MTX bolts straight on.. through the bellhousing lip into the back of the engine. The ATX looks like it bolts to the bellhousing of the tranny alone.
