ZE Distributor with internal coil???

So I got my 2nd KL-ZE today. Markings on the head are proper, square intake runners, no egr, so I'm 100% sure it's a true ZE. So I started to take the distributor off because I know the ZE disty has an external coil.... well, this one here only has 6 "plug" wires comming off from it and the 2 connectors. My last ZE's disty had 7... I did a search and turned up nothing from anybody having an internal coil ze distributor. So I figured it was just hiding somewhere that I couldn't see, so I pulled it off anyways and there are only 6.... anybody ever heard of this before??

Thats how mine came to. Just check that the rear head has no EGR passage. The EGR passage would be on the drivers side, back, bottom corner of the head. If it has a port there than it might not be a ZE.

I'm guessing you got a curved neck motor?

100% sure it's a ZE. No EGR, and the markings on the head are kl31.

So yours came like that as well?? weird...

No such thing as an internal coil distributer on a klze. Maybe an american disty was swapped over before you had it. Post a pic of the engine, I'd like to see it.

More imporantly, pull one of the valve covers off. The cams must be stamped kl31. I went through the same problem. A company sent me an engine stating it was a klze. They were claiming two different kinds of klze's, one with kl01 on the cams and one with kl31 on the cams. The "kl01" klze engine was in fact an american kl03. I Got the "kl01" version dyno'd and it put down only 134 to the wheels. Sent it back and got a true klze.

Curved neck KLZE's have KL01 cams. They have been dyno proven to produce as much power as the KL31 cammed(sp?) straight neck engines.

Yeah... it'as cause 98 and + years KLZE have now 6 plug. This is because you got the millenia curved neck. Tey comming whit the kl-01 cams, it's normal. These give tou more low-torque than the kl-36 but you got less hight torque.

When did yu get your engine? I trought that NAgano did'nt have some anymore...

I'd like to see a pic of the engine. I'm beginning to think a curved neck klze IM is a myth. I just haven't seen one yet. I have only seen straight neck IM's that have been swapped for the millenia curved neck. If you have a 98 or newer klze then you lucked out big time.

Here is some info on the motor I got from noyan-

-curved neck
-KL01 cams
-No EGR passages on the block
-EGR passage on the manifold had a block off plate
-Internal coil distributor- which mechanically was different than my K8 dist. The rotor is offest by about 30 degrees and the cap was different with a different plug wire pin out. The coil to cap connection was different also.
-Oil filter had only japanese writing/lettering on it. That could just mean there is a huge north american market for used japanese oil filters ;)

Of course the pic of the back of the engine is blurry. The engine is in now in so taking a pic of the back is tough. I think I can get a good shot from underneath it. I'm doing some more exhaust work this weekend so I'll try then. I can take some distributor pics also if you want.

Here are some pics during the swap if anyone is interested. I did 99% of it by myself so I didn't have lots of time to take pictures.

thats exactly what mine looked like!

Also found this japanese site with some millenia specs & pictures-

http://syuninracing.k-server.org/pripri/huzii.html

thats a slight cross post since I just put it in another thread.

That site lists the millenia engine as 197hp & 164tq

I also found out that the latest j-spec millenia's power has been downgraded slightly due to emissions constraints. They are now 187hp & 161tq
