overflow tank not holding coolant

my mx-3 has a bad coolant leak. the overflow tank isn't holding well at all. it seems to be maintained in the system though, because the car has still been operating at normal temperatures even after "spirited" driving. if looking at the engine bay head on there is smoke coming up on the right side of the engine when i keep the coolant tank filled. my theory is there's a bad hose between the overflow tank and the actual cooling system that's leaking onto a hot component of the engine and burning off.

Are you filling the tank? If so how much?

You're not suposed to keep the coolant resevoir 'filled'. I wouldn't even have it halfway filled.

well then I would take it to a mechanic and get them to pressure test the cooling system and let them find the leak.

allright that's probably what i'm going to do. i thought i'd check on here real quick to see if there was a common hose or point in the system this happened at frequently that i could fix/replace before spending the $.

Hi,
its possible that you exchanged the two filler caps.
One is with an overpressure-ventile, that belongs
to the radiator, the other one on the left side
of the engine.Check that, could possible be.
