hello all,

I have a 92 gs 1.8 with 135,000 miles on it.when i got it( for free) it run rough. since then, i put plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, And valve cover gaskets on it. heree lies my problem- when started when engine is cold it cranks a few times before it starts. then it idles at 2500 rpms for a few minutes, then comes down to 900 rpms. after that it has a slight misfire and no power till about 4000 rpms. also it stinks out the exhaust. will not pass emmisions.also im getting roughly 95 miles to a tank of gas(10 mpg) which i know something isn't right. now, ive cleaned the iac motor, new air filter, checked timing, checked compression(between 120-135 psi),no vacuum leakes, and i am in the process of checking all fuel injectors( so far ohmed them out and checked coil voltage-- going to check flow tomorrow). what in the world am i missing or what else to check? Please help me, running out of options.

thank you
Nate

Did you try to turn the disty a bit? Your sparks could be a little late or you timing could be off. Did you check the timing belt?

Hi,
check the Distributor. In there are two metal
caps, one with 6 fingers, one with half circle.
They give the SGC and the SGT signal, so the ECU
knows when to fire. These two are only sticked
together, it could happen that one stucks, happens
at higher rpm, so a misfire happens.
Normaly a Code is saved (03 or 04 or both).
There is also a replacing kit available from
Mazda (ignition switch in one and coil in an other,
Mazda numbers are KLY1-18-V80 or KL1-118-V80)
but i don't know if that is available in the US.
Is much cheaper than a complete Distributor.

All this is for OBDI and KL-Disty.

With OBDI its easy:
open the diagnostic box, make a shortcut with a wire
between "TEN" and "GND", then take a 12V Lamp,
connect one side of the Lamp on "FEN" and the
other side to "B+" (or directly on battery's
plus), then turn (or better LET turn by another
person) the ignition key to "ON", NOT starting
the engine. IF codes are saved, the lamp begins
to flash the codes , Code 14 is flashed 1x long,
4x short, code 23 is flashed 2x long, 3x short
and .....
No flashing, no errors.
