well i was just getting to the freeway and hit about 110mph then hit traffic so i coasted down in 5th gear to about 75 or so then all of a sudden my engine dies. so as im coasting i try to start it up again that didnt work. i pulled over and tried again after a couple of mins and checking under the hood and it started up. i tried getting back onto the freeway and as soon as i hit about 3500 rpm's in first gear it died once again.even when the car is idle it will die when it hits 4200rpm's. the car has 150,000 miles and a knocking noise from over revving a few times or something. Does anyone know what the problem could be??

I hate to be the one to tell you but here goes, your distributor is on its way out. This problem
happens to everyone eventually. It will only get
worse to the point were the car won't start anymore. look on the bright side, at least you got 150k before yours went. I only got 80k miles before mine did the exact same thing as yours is doing.

today i went out and bought a new disty. i installed it then turned the car on and it seemed fine so i let it run and right as i start to walk away to go inside the house it dies and does the same thing as before. any other suggestions of what it can be?

after wondering if it could be the cap and rotor cause they were a bit dirty i went out and bought new ones too but now the car wont even start, what could the problem be? The ecu maybe????

Have you checked the wiring harness leading to the distributor. It could be cracked causing it to misfire or not even start because the same thing is happening to me right now. I'm trying to get a hold of a new one but $421 bucks isn't easy to come by. Hope this helps.

I'd check some of your vacumme connections as well, just to rule that out.

Well I had the exact same problem. I let it go for a long time and it would stall all the time. Finally I got a new engine put in because mine was over 300,000 kms. But my car still wouldn't run. I had to buy a new distributor and that fixed the problem right away. Just check all the connections and wires going to the distributor. My mechanic told me if it wasn't my distributor it was either my ignition or the computer. good luck

were did you get the distributor? new or used?
I would bring the distributor back and exchange it for another. I have read on the Probe message board of people installing remanufactured disty's just to have them fail right away.
I purchased mine from mazda, it came with a new cap and rotor. Its been working fine since then.

well andy i got the disty from autozone so its OEM which is probably why it possibly failed right away... who knows... but could there be other problems such as a bad ecu or maybe fuel pump?? i put a new clear filter on and its getting gas but could it be getting enough is the question?

I doubt its a fuel related problem.
If you have a volt meter, verify that you have power going to the distributor.
you could also verify that you have spark at the plugs.
I have not heard of one case of the ecu failing, so I'm also inclined to rule that out also.
if you have spark and fuel at the plugs then possibly a timming belt.
check all the main fuses under the hood, can't hurt.

ok as you suggested andy i checked the plugs again and they are getting good spark, the fuses are all fine, and the timing is correct. also all the vaccum lines are good. so could it be that i should try getting another disty since the other new one i got failed or try something else? there really isnt any other things left except the ECU.
