I have this whistling sound coming from my car under accelleration. It seems to be coming from the right side of the engine bay. Sound does not rise and fall with rpms. I figure its some sort of exhaust leak. Anyone have an ideas of what it may be?

My friend had the exact same problem with his car, he ended up getting an new engine, front end, etc. But it never fixed the problem, turns out there was a small hairline crack in the windsheild that caused the whole problem... try that... my 0.02

well are u sure it is coming from the engine or the front wheel? cause it sounds like a loose bearing.

thats very possible as i'm not sure exactly where the sound is coming from. I didnt think a wheel bearing would make the noise only when the gas is pressed though. I guess i'll take a look at that

I have the same problem, it sounds like a whining type noise only heard well when the window is down and you are driving past something (sound bounces back). I'm thinking it's a bearing on a pulley, but I have yet to find out how/where/what to replace because I've never done anything with pulleys. Maybe you just buy a new one? Or are bearings in them replaceable?

could be an uneven brake pad or rotor. If it wears down under high stress (you brake because of a tractor trailor or something pulls out infront of you) a piece of dirt may be caught between the two. Eventually as one or the other wears down a peak is formed on the surface which may rub against the other. This can create the noise you may be hearing. Eventually the bump will wear down, or you can have your brakepads replaced when you go in for inspection, couldn't hurt.
The other option is your intake, do you have aftermarket? If you do this may be it. My intake is the same way, if I open the throttle a little bit it will emit a high pitched squeel. Kinda neat when I'm bored because I can hold the throttle position and make the noise the whole way through town if I want. Or when I'm going past someone I don't like.
Where are you located in Pa?
[ September 30, 2002: Message edited by: Hy300 ]

my noise comes exclusively front the right side of the car so i doubt its the intake. It doesnt do it when i brake so i dont think its the brakes either, however i'll be replacing those this weekend so we'll see.

i think its a vacuum leak. ever since i found out i had a vacuum leak, i noticed that i would hear a small whistling somewhere behind the intake manifold near the firewall...never found it though.

I had this same problem and it turned out to be the alternator showing its age. Replaced the alternator and it went away.
