How to properly seal phenolic spacers?

I think I found out why my engine won't idle properly with the phenolic spacers.
I tested the seal around the spacers using starting fluid and sure enough they were leaking, mostly at the engine block, but also at the throttle body. I used the Permatex #1B "form a gasket sealant" specified by Outlaw Engineering and it didn't seal properly at all. It was all brittle, except close to the fuel injectors where it didn't dry properly. I re-read the instructions on the sealant and it said that it shouldn't come into contact with fuel.
Is there an alternative gasket sealant I can use? If there isn't a better gasket sealant, would the (expensive) stock Mazda gaskets solve the problem?
[ June 04, 2002: Message edited by: dorin ]
