CLAMP THE SPRINGS?

A friend of mine said a cheaper way to lower your car was to clamp the springs. Is this safe, and will keep the ride smooth?

When i had my 97 mirage and i clamped the springs it was still smooth but the only risk is if the clamp brakes you might have a problem, i personaly have not clamped my mx3's springs.
