hey, i have a '93 1.6 mx-3 and last time i took off my door panels, i noticed there aint very much room for bigger speakers, and i was wondering how everybody has installed new speakers before i go choping away, or making mounting brackets, anyways, lemme know which is the best recommended way...

you can build spacers out of 1/4" wood or smething and squeeze a little more room for mounting depth but you can't go too far b/c of the grille. Really we just try to deal w/ it

Limits us but there are still some decent speakers that are shallow.

Other option is build a new grille that goes in to the door

i made some 1/4" plywood spacers to mount my AVI components. it helps with the spacing and also sounds better (i hate the sound of speakers screwed into metal), also stick some sound deadening material on the the door around the speaker, and on the door skin, helps cut down on rattles.

kool, thanks for the imput, i was planning on geting some sound deadening material anyways and lining my trunk compartment, and whatever i could reach in the doors, and my roof, i figure it would help at least a little bit for everything, and thanks for the spacer idea, ill keep that in mind, im also about to buy 2 6x9's and a couple tweeters, my bro has an amp that he's gonna give me for the 6x9's, im gonna mount those in a hatch cover im about to build, and point em to the hatch glass, my tweeters are goin in the little triangles on the mirror part.. thx

i would try to stay away from the 6x9's if you can. The best thing to do is buy a set of components (mids,tweets and x-over), mount the mids in the stock door positions (using a wood spacer) and mount the tweeter either next to the door handles or behind the mirrors as you suggested. If you want more bass add a small sub and amp (or an active sub). you really dont need any midrange in the rear of the car, it will really mess with the soundstage.

I currently run a similar setup... 5" componets in the doors, tweets next to the handles, and a 10" sub behind the passenger seat.

a simple but very sweet sounding setup.

well that is true, my brother knows alot about audio setup too, he's the one that suggested the 6x9's (i do like the idea of em), and about the bass, i already have 2 12" subs behind the backseat, so i've got my bass :p right now im trying to fine tune the system, and get everything hitting at the right times and such, cause right now with the factory speakers i have in the doors, i have the 2 12"ers in the back, and i also have mids in the stock speaker compartments in the trunk area that i changed out to get rid of the factory's in the back, and i wanna add a good crisp high set (the tweets) then have my subs hittin lows, then have the mids up front, and in back (why the 6x9 suggestion), to even everything out... anyways, keep suggesting things, cause i do like the imput

Which is most important to you? how loud it is or how good it sounds?

from a pure SQ point of view, you dont want any mids or highs behind you... all you want is some very good components in the front, and the subs in the back (in an ideal world you want the bass to be in the front too... but its not very directional, so you can get away with it in the back)

Putting mids in the rear can also mess up the sound of your subs... and the frequencies coming from the rear shelf can effect the sound from the subs below them.

If you really want some sound in the back, then i would put some mids in the the stock locations in the rear, and just run them of the head unit, just to give some rear fill.

spend as much as you can on a good set of fronts and a amp for them (thats where most of the sound will be coming from, or at least it should be)

The more speakers you have in the car the harder it is to make it sound good..... there are more sound waves boucing around the car, and unless you can time align every speaker... its gonna sound nasty... IMO

i dunno the currency exchange, but im in the us, so i have noooooooo clue about the prices you just posted, i can prolly spend $100us if im not buying 6x9's

I would say that the infinitys are good at that price range... i will look around to see if there is anything else for < $100

I think I will be trying the wood spacer option when I get my car back from the body shop. I've had some spacing problems with my infinities (kappa 63.5 3-way). I've contemplated building new grilles but don't want the hassle, and wnat to keep the current look. Right now you can see the buldge of the extended tweeter behind the grille (I didn't go for components ) I'll keep you guys posted.

i dont know if any one said this because i kinda went through the replys fast. but i think i saw that they were selling spacers on ebay, for our car, just search mx3 and you should see them a couple pages in. might be better than making your own.

usualy the spacers you can buy are made of plastic, i always find that wood sounds better.

It should only take you a couple of minutes to make the spacers yourself.

I think the CIVIC spacers will also fit the mx
