Speaker Setup, need more bass!

I just bought a set of Audiobahn 12" AW1251Q (400RMS) speakers in a box and had them put in and wired to my Rockford Fosgate Punch 225.2 amp. I was hoping that they would be extremely loud as I have heard this amp when in a mono bridge can produce around 800 watts. They wired it up in stereo 4 ohm x 125 watts to each speaker and the sound was nice but not that loud.
Later that day my battery died and I had to get a jump. I was a bit suprised because I was very careful not to run the stereo without the car turned on. Long story short, the battery was toast.. While it was charging all night I took out the speakers and inspected the wiring for something that might have killed the battery, to no avail.
Today I bought a new battery and haven't had any problems so far. However, the subs are about 25% of the volume they used to be and now they are pretty distorted when you turn them up. If I unplug one of the two speakers it goes back to being incredibly loud. But with two it now sounds weak and distorted.
I tried hooking up the speakers in a mono bridge to see if that would fix the problem, but it sounded exactly the same as it did at 4 ohm stereo, weak and distorted.
Could it be that this amp just doesn't have the power for these speakers? Or did my battery completely dieing drop the voltage too low for the amp and damage something?
Thanks guys,
NCRedGSV6
[ January 06, 2003: Message edited by: NCRedGSV6 ]

I took it back to the shop to ask the guys there about it and they said that one of the speakers was wired backwards in the box. (Aparently they forgot to tell me) So I plugged it back to the amp out of phase. Flipping one of the speakers fixed the problem. And with the mono bridge they are loud enough at low volume to skip my cd player (very loud!).
So if that happens to you, check the wiring not only outside of the box but inside the box too. Or, build your box yourself so you don't have to worry about that crap.
NCRedGSV6
