Did anyone see that yesterday. Man the media is really eating this up. I mean on the mtv one true life street racer they said kids racing in neighborhood streets when all they showed was industrial streets. Man I really am going to fix up my car but is it going to be worth it for tickets and cops bugging.

You know I think the Media sometimes shoots itself in the foot when it comes to street racing.
Like after all if the media didn't give it so much attention as it has been lately then there would probably be less people purposely going out to race on the streets.
Sure there will always be people who want to street race reguardless of whether it is covered on TV or not but its the people that might not otherwise ever do it that see it on TV and get the idea hey let's go that, it looks cool.
Basically I think the Media needs to re-think it's approach when it comes to covering news about street racing. What to change exactly? I am not really sure myself but I think what is happening now is that the Media and the police are making it sound all so horrible and bad that people are thinking wait a minute what's the big deal about this, maybe I should check it out for myself.
Of course the average middle-aged baby-boomer isn't going to decide one day to go check out the races but it is the younger people maybe 16-30 where I think the negative media coverage is actually having the opposite effect.

I agree with Andrew. The media is making street racing seem a lot more appealing to that younger crowd by portraying it as mysterious and dangerous.
If you look at all of the extreme sports that are popular today such as skateboarding, BMX, motocross, they all involove insane stunts and tricks that have the potential to cause great bodily harm so the old argument of "you could kill yourself" really doesn't carry a lot of weight with this crowd.
I think shows like this Boston Public episode are aimed at parents to try and get them to stop their kids from racing, but when I was 16 my main goal in life was to do whatever my parents and the authorities told me that I couldn't.
Ever since the Fast and the Furious street racing has started to become increasingly mainstream so that every kid sporting their mom's Accord thinks that they are Vin Diesel and that every stoplight is a drag race. I'm not condoning it, but at least in the old days it was mostly just the serious guys who street raced and they managed to stay out of the public eye by doing so in unpopulated areas under somewhat controlled conditions.

street racing is getting huge in the younger crowd i should know cause im 17. i drive a modified mx-3 and people think im a street racer right off the bat. at stop lights people in crappy cars rev their engines and take off when the light turns green, as i go the normal speed.
At my highs school people challenge me to races and crap and i turn them down. not all kids want to be street racers but most do and most do it in their parents cars but please dont stero type a young person in a modified car because not we are not all street racers.
yes after the fast and the foolish many think they are vin deisel or whatever and this needs to stop. thats a movie in real life when you race you get hurt and you hurt other people.
as for the police they need to crack down on racing not crack down on modified cars i cant go a week without being pulled over and talked to by a police officer. this kinda bugs me but im going to have to get used to it as this as the trend in racing for young people will only continue to grow

I wonder if more tracks were made if that would reduce illegal street racing? I know that in the general area I'm from it takes about 1.5-2hrs to get to the nearest track, not saying that this is an excuse for street racing, just saying that if some honda pulls up to and starts reving the engine, you can say to him/her "meet me at the track tomorrow." or something.
Ya figure that with all the $$$$ these performance shops are making, a couple of them could get together and sponsor a new track.
my 2 cents

people ask me to race at my high school all the time (im 16)and i turn them down. i get made fun of all the time but its worth saving my life over. Almost watched my firend wreck his truck today while showing off at a stop light. hes got a 350 in it pushing around 350hp. well anyways the road was wet and he took off kinda fast and since he doesn't have a posy rear one wheel spun and the other gripped and his truck spun arround right in front of oncoming traffic. this just shows that something as simple as taking off fast and not being careful can be dangerouse. i just hate to see people wreck their cars after puting so much work into them.
just my 2 well maybe 10 cents lol

Hey guys.
I seriously find this matter hideous. U guys don't race with 4 bangers cause u loose to minivans. I know i did when i Had my SOHC, but now I have a BP-T i see the pride in being a street racer. I mean i never spend $4000 for nothing. Racing on a track is gay cause its a straight line. On the roads and higways u have turns and obstacles like other cars which make it a true test of skill. Everyone does it and its cool IMO. Why can't we talk about street racing here..all other forums allow it and i think we should too. We don't add performance for our cars for nothing, even though we say we do.
Joel
ps i hope noone offended.its an open topic and i hope u all agree with me, then mx-3.com have no choice but to allow street racing

Sorry Joel but not too many people will agree with you.

quote:
I mean i never spend $4000 for nothing. Racing on a track is gay cause its a straight line.

With by B6T swap I have spend close to $10000 over the purchase price of this car and I still don't feel the need to street race.

quote:
On the roads and higways u have turns and obstacles like other cars which make it a true test of skill.

This does not prove skill, just stupidity. If you are racing on the street against someone and have to swerve to miss a car, losing the race, you obviously didn't prove that you have the better car. If your on the track, there are no excuses other than skill and equipment.
Personally, I have almost been hit by a group of racers. The guy that almost hit me, swerved to miss, clipped the curb and almost ran into another car. His opponent locked his brakes and missed rear ending someone in the other lane by only a few feet. These guys were going over 90kph in a 50 zone, very impressive.
I don't mind driving 40 minutes to go to SIR each weekend to race. I also don't mind the drive to SaskPlace to auto-X in the parking lot. Do I wish we had a true road course here, sure do. Am I going to make my own down in Erindale, no way.

Driving on the track is truely skill. Yes, it may be in a straight line, but the whole point of the track is time. Time is how you win. If you race yourself, you have to beat yourself. Thats how you improve your racing skills. Going out, putting yourself, and everyone else in danger by street racing isnt skill, its ignorant. Big deal, the only slip your gonna end up with is a ticket. There was a video of a news report posted I believe it was last year about an MX-3 vs an SUV. Guess what happend. The SUV swirved, flipped and killed an innocent person who was on the sidewalk. Why, because they were idiots.
[ November 07, 2002: Message edited by: Custommx3 ]
