A friend of mine said that its impossible to drift in a FWD car is this true? If its impossible to drift in a FWD car then what am I doing when im flying sideways when i turn onto the highway?

dude drifting is not simply sliding your car.. despite what everybody says.

but with a FF car or fwd whatever.. it is possible, just hella harder. o_0 i been tryin for a long time and still cannot get it right. by pulling the hand brake, you can you can get a nice slide out of the rear wheels, but you lose speed coming out of the turn. so what i hear you do is... go insanely fast into a corner, down shift so you have some high rpms, gas it.. and use left-foot braking. so tap the brake while gassing it and turning the wheel very sharply. difficult to pull off, but you can slide with that technique.

either way you get thru the corner a lot faster than other people haha.. so go and read or watch the Initial D series! LOL theres all u need to know in there

or you simply use a heel toe action, keeping traction and a top speed, and keeping the rpms high enough to jet yourself outta the corner. bes thing for fwd.

in a fwd, you dont drift, you *** drag.

in a rwd, too many people think they drift, when they just accidently break loose in the *** -end. if you wanna practice drifting...find a big parking lot and practice, and if you use cones to give you a corner. that way, you dont risk going into a curb or another vehicle in the process.

Getting a FWD car sideways isn't that hard, but actually making a controlled drift is difficult, but still possible.

A RWD car can be drifted just by downshifting and using torque to get the rear tires to slip thus putting the car into oversteer which means you have no steering, and your car goes straight until you slow down.

So we have to get the FWD car to oversteer. Say we're coming into a left bend...

1) Heel toe shift at entry of the bend to the appropriate entry speed. Quick wheel turn left, quick wheel turn right, hard turn left. (this shifts the car's weight and sets up the inertia for the car to want to go sideways)

2) While making your hard turn left pull the e-brake. Only hold the ebrake on long enough to lose traction in the rear tires and you feel the car begin to slide out. Release the e-brake. Now this part is critical... you must use the e-brake and gas throughout the turn to balance the drift. If the *** end is starting to go out too far then more gas, and if the *** end isn't going out far enough pull the e-brake again.

In a perfect drift you should be constantly accelerating, and only gunning it a little more when the *** end wants to slide out further.

I'm definitely no drifting expert, but this is how I do it in a FW drive, and this is what I think works best in an MX-3. I recommend practicing in a wet parking lot. With the pavement wet you can practice at lower speeds.

well this morning it was been raining, so i thought i'd try it on my way to work. MY BAD!! i entered the turn too fast, and stomped on the break, not heel toeing it or pumping.. so when i turned the wheel, i just locked up and hydroplaned. hahaha man did that SUCK!! slid across probably 3 lanes until i regained control. so yes, if you're gonna slide ur car, do it in an empty lot. street drifting is dangerous and should only be done by pro's or people who realize they're CrAzY.. but of course.. i gotta try it again. HAHA

i just got back from a nice drift session, in a parking lot of course, was fun, you can drift a FWD car, just takes alot of practice and the right touch

Hey Papa roached. Did you go to the US Drift event up in Richmond Saturday? I also had a run in with you on Colosieum Drive one day last week in my friend's 99 Mustang. It was red with 3.8 emblem's on the side. You might or might not of remembered.

Ya I got a MX-3. It's a black 4cyl with a primer hood, fx designs hood scoop, lowered, steelies and a v6 spoiler. A friend of mine also post on here and had a KL-ZE MX-3, but it was totaled in a accident. He got a new one and is about to put the KL-ZE in that one once he gets some time. I don't have any recent pictures at the moment, but I'll take some with my friends digital camera and post them.

i still stand firm and say you cannot drift a fwd car. a drift is a controlled slide that allows for a faster enterence into corner and out of the corner. if you can kick ur rear-end out, and keep it out, sweet, not saying it doesnt look sweet, and not saying dont do it, but to me drifting takes a lil more. ive had a few drifts in rwd car but nothing to really exlaim about for im still learning, still practicing...when i can drive a friends rwd car.

perhaps some vids of some of you guys could be posted...make a lil vid of it, would be cool to see. anyone up for it? if i had my mx i would be!

Staying Sideways: Front-Wheel Drive

1. It’s harder to do than in a RWD because you don’t have the oversteer characteristics of a rear-wheel-drive car. So you use the weight of the car and the emergency brake. Please remember: Only attempt in an area expressly deemed legal and safe for drifting, never on public roads. Steer into the turn as hard as possible, until you feel the back end begin to oversteer.

2. With the clutch in, pull the E-brake with the clutch. Simultaneously, take your foot off the gas pedal until the car swings completely sideways.

3. Countersteer the wheel in the complete opposite direction of the turn. This releases any tire grip from the front tires.

4. Drop the E-brake. Hit the gas full throttle. The car will continue to drift.

5. When you feel the car coming out of the drift, rapidly release the steering wheel, and let it spin to straighten itself. When it does, grab it, and cruise out of the drift.

drifting is drifting. kicking the rear on on a turn can be done by anybody. it is not a drift to kick out your rear end even in a rwd it called oversteer.
