a friend of my family told me it was the ignition control module. so i bought 1 of ebay and hopefully it will be here tommaro, the problem is that i marked my disty with chalk and upon takin it out i accidently whipped it off. DAMNIT....i think i might be in a bit of trouble

When I was installing my BP, I was getting what I think was a code 3 along with many other codes. The Chilton manual (I forget if it was the one for the MX-3 or for the Escort) had a section on testing the sensors in the distributor.
Basically, you can pull the distributor off the engine. Then (with the main spark wire unplugged) turn on the ignition, but don't start the engine. You can monitor the sensor signals with a voltmeter. One will pulse once per revolution of the disty(crank angle sensor), and the other will pulse 4 times per rev (cam angle sensor).
If you don't have a volt meter, the cam angle sensor will cause the fuel injectors to fire, and you can hear them.
My crank angle sensor was bad, and I replaced the disty. The car was running fine at the time too. I doubt if it would run with a bad cam angle sensor, but I don't know that.
Also remember if you do this your ignition timing will be off when you reinstall the disty, so plan on going through the adjustment for this.

No, its behind the rotor..take the rotor off and then you have the black cover to remove and you see the part I'm talking about..

the big black piece that comes off after you undo the screw in the middle behind the rotor?
never mind this is the wrong disty for my car
