Mine has a sharp tap under the valve cover that I have determined to be the HLA's (hydraulic lash adjusters.) I've been told they can get noisy when they are old and worn out, though mine only tap at startup sometimes (and only on cylinder #1.) As soon as I hear the tap, I shut it down, wait a few seconds, and restart. It never comes back after that. What weight oil are you running and what kind of temperatures are you having? I believe that tap can also be caused by incorrect oil pressure. Better have a resident expert talk about that, though. I can't think of anything related to the timing belt itself that could make a tapping noise.
Good luck,
Darren

Mazda told me that the ticking sound is normal on the k-series engines.
Just change oil regularly, and use the correct type for your climate.
Also, correct use of engine flush helps alot.
