Im just curious to get someone's info on what i just bought for parts for my bpt gtx engine.
First off my engine is in rather good condition to start with. I Bought:
-New Head Stage 3 upgrade from corksport (Cleaned up intake and exhaust ports, port matached to gaskets. Addtional port work , 3-angle valve job, new valve guides. More port work, rebuilt lifters, oversized valves.)
-New Performance Camshafts from corksport
-New GTX Exhaust Manifold (port matched)
-New GTR Intake Manifold
and a few other things like underdrive crank pulley etc...
I was wondering if i went the right way of building my engine? All i know so far is im spending alot of money. Any suggestions on what to do with the bottom end since ill have the engine in pieces pretty soon?
Thanks

Re: BPT GTX Buildup Question
it sounds like a good base. i talked to the guys at etd and one suggested using a 99 miata head...havent looked to deep into it but for a higher hp goal something to concider.
good luck with the swap...kinda sux seeing all you do it now, when i was getting so close to do mine!

Re: BPT GTX Buildup Question
Don't waste your money building the stock BPT head. Go and buy yourself a '99 miata head, if you do it right, 50hp can be gained. The head comes with a better port design, higher lift cams and solid lifters. Don't buy a stock intake manifold, get a nice sheetmetal one fab'd up for you. I am sure that there is a reputable shop in your area that can do the work for you. You can sometimes find a good deal on the complete head. I would say that $2000 should get you a '99 head, custom intake and exhaust manifolds. That is the way to build up the BP properly.
For the bottom end, how much are you willing to spend for this project? Flyin' Miata will have the 2.0L stroker kit ready at the end of the month. Complete kit comes with new pistons, rods and crankshaft...$3400 USD (well worth it). Otherwise, look into some Crower/Pauter/Carillo rods and Wiseco pistons. About $1200-1500 usd for one of those combos. Mazdaspeed has a set of 3 layer bearings available through Mazda Competition.
All that power won't do you any good without a good stand alone computer. Check out Haltech, AEM, TEC (my choice) for good options - $1000-3000 USD.
Don't mean to scare you away with the pricing but you may as well do things right the first time....trust me.

Re: BPT GTX Buildup Question
Maldo thank you for all this very helpful information. Basicly my goals are a strong, long lasting built BPT with/or close to 250whp. Ive been searching my area for custom fabbing shops for a while, no luck yet so for now its the GTR Intake Manifold. The 99 miata head sounds like a very good idea, im guessing its basicly a BP head with better design. Since ive already got this GTX project going (kinda hard to back out with a few thousand $$ invested already) i think ill start building another BP on the side.Originally posted by maldo:

I have no idea where to look for a 99 miata head with all the work done to it, if you know a phone # or link(s) that would help alot. I do plan to use a standalone (Haltech).
If i build a BP using the miata head, upgraded pistons and rods, custom manifolds, upgraded turbo (which ill most likely use) etc...Im worried about the tranny not holding the amount of hp ill be putting out, but thats down the road...
Im Fairly new to this so im trying to learn all i can. Thanks again for the help.

Re: BPT GTX Buildup Question
I actually made the mistake of rebuilding the BPT head. I spent over $1200 just on valves, coatings, radius valve job, clean up and resurfacing. The shop also port matched, cleaned, and coated my GTX intake manifold additionally. Unfortunatley, I spun the rod bearings and bent two rods in the process from an untuned 20lb boost spike. That left my newly rebuilt head with all kinds of metal in it. Since then, I've bought another GTX engine and plan to increase the displacement to a 2.0 with the old block. I'm glad Flyin Miata is coming out with stroker kit now. Can't wait for that.
It would be wise to use the Miata head, or even the 1st gen Protege head over the BPT's. If you've spent the money, it's still ok and just fine for your hp goals. 250hp is not really not that hard to do with the BP. In fact, I would'nt touch the bottom end if that's all you plan to make. The tuning part, it sounds like you're headed in the right direction and will make the biggest difference. The G series trannys will take some abuse, but I would'nt count on it when driving like a maniac. Overall, they're strong, and they'll take 250hp treated right.
